Question about Maytag Neptune MAH5500B Front Load Washer

1 Answer

My washer clangs and dances like crazy!!!

I thought my struts had worn out, the front boot is also torn from this problem. New struts and front boot. Still appears to be posessed by the devil!! Is there a screen in the drain somewhere stopping some of the water from draining? This would make sense of my problem if the pump couldn't get all the water out of the machine, clothes stay wet and go nuts in spin. I will look myself and hope for a response if my search is unsuccessful.

This just in, no screen. Must be a burned out winding in the motor. Not the high speed, but a lower speed to centrifugally remove water for the pump to move out before the high speed spin. Fair guess?

Nop goodies in the drain. It was the motor which is still under warranty, however after calling Maytag, they told me that a service tech would have to do the service. I am an industrial air conditioning technician. I take car of roughly 40 acres under roof at a steel mill. Still they insist I must be stupid, and a tech must do the install. Luckily the parts guy heard my whole rant to Maytag customer dis-service and gave me the motor, still under it's 10 year warranty, at wholesale. The price was $153 before tax. Please advertise against Maytag if you can. Their service sucks. My washer works great now, the motor was the fix.

I have torn rubber on front struts at top where it connect into engine compartment

Replace them... the rubber boots protect the upper joint of the strut, corrosion of this joint will lead to excessive wear causing alignment issues. Depending on your mileage and the type of roads you drive on, it may well be time to replace the entire strut.

A loud metal to metal clanging noise in the front of the car

Are you sure the struts and strut bearings are installed correctly and all fasteners are tight? Did you check your stabilizer links? Did you check your stabilizer frame bushings? Did you check your tie rod ends? Did you check the lower ball joints? Did you check the control arm bushings? Did you check for loose or missing brake caliper bolts?

I am sure that a thorough inspecton of the front steering and suspension system will turn up something. However, it is really hard to accurately guess from this end without more to go on than just a "metal clanging noise"....there are way too many things that can fit that desription.

Periodic clunck in front end

A 2003 SUV will clock in over 80,000 miles.

It's time to inspect the shocks and struts.

The periodic clunck you hear in front end can cause by

mud guard boot to metal strut body contact

worn strut center post to body of strut contact

worn rubble linkage

or combination to all of the above.

I would take the SUV to a good car wash that has under carriage cleaning.

Let the SUV dry and inspect it someone who can compress the front end.

If the front of the SUV re-bound two times then the struts will need to replace.

Hi looks my Maytag Neptune needs to have the front boot replaced

It is not too difficult to replace the boot. You have to remove the door (remove the screws that go into the door frame, not the door itself, and tilt the door out). Remove the screws on the opposite side of the door frame and remove the front panel (this will hinge on the bottom). From there, remove the soap dispenser bezel (4 phillips screws) and the two brackets (5/16" nutdriver) that are located in the front, just under the top. Now the top will tilt up. The boot will be pressed into the white plastic boot bezel (tongue and groove style) this needs to be pulled away from the bezel at this point. Now, remove the (4) 5/16" screws that hold the boot bezel in place and put aside. There is a wire ring with a spring that holds the boot to the drum, carefully roll the ring off the boot, it may snap on you so be careful. Pull old boot off and replace with new. Make sure to align the new boot with the indicators on the drum. *****NOTE!!! A bad boot is often an indicator of other part failures, most common of these are the shocks/struts that are under the drum assembly. If these are bad, your new boot will go bad quickly.*******

Washer was jumping and dancing when it got to spin cycle

The only thing to check is to see that some struts behind is taken off. This is inserted to prevent the drum from banging around during transit; refer to your manual. Important.
