Question about Dell Inspiron 6000 Notebook
I'm having the same exact problem with my dell laptop... But I don't have the original cd's that the computer came with, they got misplaced somewhere over the years... I figured that I need to reboot my computer, but I want to be able to back up my data first so that I don't lose all my pictures, music and MS word documents. Should I purchase the cd's again, or do i just get a new hard drive? Is there anything that can be done to save all my files? Please, any advice would be helpful
There is a few things you can do. You can purchase a new Windows CD from your favorite electronics store and install it. If you do that, you will have to visit the dell support site, put in your service code, and download all the drivers to install manually on your computer. If you purchase and install Windows 7, which is Microsoft's latest version of Windows, it should recognize most if not all drivers needed for your system.
In terms of backing up your system: Once you have purchased a new hard drive and loaded windows onto it, you can also purchase an external hard drive enclosure kit (one without a hard drive in it). Using this kit, you can take the hard drive out of your old system and put it into this kit. Plugging the device into the computer (after installing windows) you can then pull off all your old information.
A less expensive but not necessarily recommended short term solution would be to purchase the external hard drive enclosure kit, take the hard drive out of the system and put it into the kit, hook it up to another computer, right click on the drive in My Computer and select properties. In properties, click on tools tab, and then click "check now...". Make sure you select for it to repair any errors. This will probably (no guarantees) make your hard drive usable again, but only temporarily. Ultimately you do need to replace your hard drive.
