I have a desktop, about 8 years old, with Windows ME. We installed wireless G USB adapter which is shown as being "on" the computer but can't get an internet connection with wireless router on another computer (same house). Comes up "can't get connection" and trying to use dial-up and searching for modem. Can anyone help us?

Only Win 7 drivers on HP. You can try forcing the driver by right clicking the setup. It may work, but there is chance it won't and you will have revert back to Win 7 or wait to see if HP ever updates the driver. gl
You have to have a wireless card installed on the desktop. Either a PCI wireless card that will be installed inside the computer on one of the pci slots or you can use a usb wireless card that plugs into the usb port.
Unlike laptops, there will be no switch to turn on or off. The wireless on desktops is controlled by the software program that comes with the wireless adapter.
Try Tiger Direct at:
When the site comes up just type: PCI Wireless Adapter or USB Wireless Adapter in the white search box at the top of the page and click GO.
What version of windows are you using, xp, vista, windows 7? Also, how old is your pc? I don't see there being any problem but I'm thinking that you can purchase a USB wireless adapter as long as you have a usb port. You should check out the minimum system requirements of the adapter before you make a purchase to see if it is compatible with your system. Then, you just install the installation cd that comes with the adapter. Do you have a wireless router? This will act as your wireless access point. You will need to enable wireless on the router. Good luck. Andrew
On desktops, that's usually software controlled, not via a button. nce you have the right software installed for the usb adapter for your operating system, there should be an icon in the system tray where you can activate the wireless feature. I stress for your operating system because I had to get a new adapter once because i couldn't find vista or windows 7 drivers for my old adapter which I used with windows xp.
This is probably because your wireless adapter or network driver was uninstalled with the installation of Windows XP. I suggest looking up your motherboard and finding its network driver. If your wireless adapter is a card, then look up that driver as well.
is the wireless network adapter driver installed on your pc? if its properly installed you have to reconfigure the wireless network adapter to your belkin router. wireless usb adapter should obtain the ip address from your belkin router
check that you have all updates for your linksys and cable modem and the new adapter you bought since your pc is old..
if that doesn't help then try the following:
i would shut down pc, uplug router power, turn off the cable modem and give it all at least 10-20 secs.. plug the other pc in the router then start up cable modem and router.. after that, then turn your pc on and see if it recognizes...
is the adapter for a desktop to make wireless of a laptop, just curious..
