Help w/ ECM Giotto. pump doesn't turn on when pulling lever

Hi I need help with my ECM Giotto espresso machine. I can't pinpoint exactly when this happens, but many times when I pull the lever to run water through brewhead, no water comes out and the pump doesn't turn on. If I flick the machine off and on it immediately works again.. Then it will stop again- I flick off and on. works again... same cycle over and over.

I also get the problem of the machine not sensing any water in the tank as others have had. I can tolerate this more than the pump cutting out in the middle of my shot.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks EsWorld for your reply. I didn't even know there were magnets in the water tank. Where are they located and are replacements readily available? thanks

Replace the magnets in the water tank, the reed switch is not reading one of them, most likely the safety or bottom magnet.

You should be able to get replacements from chriscoffee. They are in the plastic reservoir. If I remember your model correctly there will be a piece om metal holding then to the side of the tank, remove water tank from back of machine, when you remove the magnets, if you shake them the one that makes noies is the broken one.

I turn the ECM Giotto on, the light comes on but the pump does not activate and no heat. 2 hours later it all works fine.

Try this open the steam valve when you turn the machine on, leave the valve open until it starts to hiss with steam, then turn off valve. If that works then the vent valve is sticking and needs to be replaced.

I have a Giotto ECM esspresso machine. it is approximately 3 yrs old. recently when i turn the machine on, it starts heating up, but it doesn't create any pressure. any suggestions how to fix this problem.

Hi
1 solution is your vacuum breaker valve is sticking. Try opening the steam valve and see if you can start to heat again. If it does just, replace your vacuum breaker valve.

Just replaced the head gasket of my giotto

HI
Make sure that the water level probes are touching the machine to ground themselves. Push down on the probes, and see if the machine comes on. With out looking at it I don't know what else to tell you.

Installed new ulka vibrating pump in my Rocket E61 (Giotto) but the pump won't prime.

Hi there,
If when you installed the new pump and turned it on and made loud vibrating sound but not pumping any water through what you need to do is when you turn the pump on open up your steam valve turning the steam knob. Usually it is just an air lock and this should allow the air out and water to flow through. When water comes out of the steam arm, close it off and water should then come out the group head as normal. If you try this and nothing happens you either have a build up of scale which you just need to try to flush a good descaler (Puly Baby Powder) through your machine or the pump you got is faulty.

All the best

Giotto premium - is it a lemon?

My friend, had the same feeling,,,What have a done !! This piece of junk for all my dollars! No ,,it needs cleaning. Read all my comments re this. You can open this machine witha few fixed keys and mantain it. It will outlast you, when correctly mantained. All solid cupper and metal, no plastic. take it apart and CLEAN IT!
Remember - it is built by a human beeing. The ECM is a buty as it has very little automation built in. Very siple function = löong time in love with your machine. It is totally ANALOG = tweek it = better cogffee. /// Olev

Wet grounds

What you see is condensed stem comming out and no water. The pump is not sucking from the tank as ther is an air bubble in suction line. Still want coffe and don't want to clean your machine??? Flick up the lever with no group in place. Steam comes first then nothing. Pump is running and - voila - water comes as air bubble is gone. (Specially the first cup , never the following ones.) Now put back the group and brew your espresso. The machine is full of scale and neds total clean - by hand./// Olev

ECM Giotto Premium (S/N 20030100413, purchased May 2003)

Well, I just spoke with the repair tech where I originally purchased my Giotto Premium 4 years ago. He knew exactly what the problem was when I described it... power light on, clicking noise (not remedied by a hard boot), water not coming out of the grouphead, not heating up etc. Apparently, this is a common problem, but is not the heating element; it's the relay box costing about $200 from GCM in Italy. Lift the lever, but nothing happen - no sound, no action...

This happened to me. If you look closely at the lever you will see that the action of lifting the lever presses in a switch that is right behind the lever on the front of the machine. This switch starts the brew pump. One of the wires connected to this switch has rattled loose and lost contact. To fix this you will have to take the top of the case (the lid) off and then use long needle nose pliers to try to grab the loose wire and re-attach it to the switch. There is not much room to manuver, but I managed to do it eventually. Unplug the machine first, of course!
