Question about Whirlpool Calypso GVW9959K Top Load Washer

Calypso Problems I am actually experiencing my first issue with a Calypso washer after 6 years of ownership. From what I have read, I am extremely lucky. I am in the process of replacing the pump. (I hope that is the real issue) The question I have, is should I proactively replace some of the other components that re failling on a regular basis? If yes, which parts? I would raher get this done once. I expect some of the reposnes may suggest not to do anything and just replace it now.

I would not reccommend replaing any more than need be on that machine, after six years of no issues, your new pump is a redesigned pump and motor one piece unit. although costly, doesnt really pay to repalce other components that arent failing at time of currnent service call

I just had the same issue diagnosed yesterday (bad pump), after 5 years of ownership. I have had an ongoing problem with the motion - I get OB (out of balance) and was using the delicate cycle for all of my washes. With both problems, the charge would have been over $600, so I am buying a new machine. The Sears repair bill will be deducted from my purchase if I buy from Sears. I assume you are aware of the class action suit against Sears for the Calypso's? Unfortunately it is too late to make a claim and would have required that you regular issues with the machine. If I were you I'd buy a new one - but DON'T buy an Oasis because apparently those are troublesome as well.

Sorry to say but they are right. The Calypso washer was a horible design given to whirlpool from maytag. I would suggest you go buy new machine. Buy someting that looks simple and easy to use. The more complicated the unit the more problems you will have down the road.

the calypso washer is much older then 2 years. they stopped making them quite a few years ago. what you are seeing is how towels will come apart when washed with an aggressive washer. even expensive towels can be poorly sewn and will come apart when washed too hard. i might suggest you use the light cycle as it has a slower washing cycle speed. if you check your older and "better" towels are not doing the same thing as your new towels. i know its not fair but it is the way towels are now. you can try to remove the threads that are coming off your newer towels and then all should be ok, but there is nothing wrong with your washer just the way towels are now.

Whirlpool Calypso - Will not start

You ever hear of dog years? Well Calypso follows those same guidelines. So your machine is 35 years old. These are the Edsel's of washing machine fame. I had a Calypso for 6 1/2 years. 3 pumps, numerous circuit boards, drive motors, phone calls and arguements with Whirlpool, along with machine downtime. I finally junked it and bought a Whirlpool Duet 9200 HT (get the made in Germany machine). A world of difference in wash quality. Fresh smelling unballed clean clothes. The Calypso was removed from the market and the subject of a class action lawsuit. Just Google it and start reading. Get comfortable first. There's a lot to read.

Have you checked the agitator? There may be sharp edges on the agitator blades. OR the towels may be getting stuck under the agitator and tub bottom. The agitator is supposed to suck the clothing down in the center and forcibly throw the clothing outwards against the tub. The cycle then repeats.
