Go to Tools menu it should have "Protect Document..." in the list.

Sorry - here's my continuation: Then it would come up with a menu at the side. Uncheck all the editing restriction options. Unless the document was passworded it should be okay. Please do rate me if this works. Thanks

This behavior may occur if the document is protected with an editing restriction of No changes (Read only) or Comments.

Note If you insert your comments in this document, you can save your changes and then return the document to the sender with your comments.

Note If you insert your comments in this document, you can save your changes and then return the document to the sender with your comments.

OR

Note If the Unprotect Document dialog box appears for you to type a password, the document is password-protected and you cannot stop the protection on this document unless you know the password.

Modification is not allowed because the selection is locked

It sounds like you're in a Protected doc. Go to Tools>Protection & see if there is a command in the submenu that reads as "Unprotect Document". If you attempt to remove the protection you may be prompted for a password. If this isn't the issue be sure to specify version info when you respond.
If using 2007, go to the Review Tab of the Ribbon if the Restrict Editing & Formatting Task Pane isn't displayed. Then click the Protect Document icon (right end of the Ribbon) & choose Restrict Editing & Formatting. At the bottom of the pane click the Stop Protection button - if there is no password require you will be allowed to revise the document.

When I try to type something in microsoft word, it says the modification is not allowed because the selection is locked and I cant type anything.

If this only happens in one particular document, try opening that document and clicking on Tools | Unprotect Document.

If all new and existing documents are locked for editing, then it's probably because you have not activated your Word/Office software, or because you have an expired trial version of Office. What happens if you start Word and click on Help | Activate Product? If you are already activated, a dialog box saying so will appear. If you are not activated, the Activation Wizard will start. If you have an expired trial version, a dialog box will prompt you to enter a valid product key or purchase a key online.

Please let me know if this has been helpful or if there is anything else I can do. Thank you.

How to protect a single cell in excel from modification

Found on the internet and it seems to work:

The default setting for each cell is for them to start locked. So, you first need to highlight ALL cells in the sheet, right click, choose format, go to the Protection tab and take the tick out of the Locked box.

Now no cells are locked.

Now you need to select the one cell you want locking. Right click, choose format cells, Protection tab and then put a tick into the Locked box.

Locking the cells does not take place until you have locked the sheet. So go to Tools, Protection and Protect Sheet. Add a password of your choosing, and put a tick into every option available to you, EXCEPT the very top option. "Select locked cells" should NOT have a tick in it.

OK that to confirm, and hey presto, that cell can no longer be selected, edited or erased unless you unprotect the sheet by entering the password you chose.
