Question about Canon Powershot A1000IS 10MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom

Open Question

I have a Canon PowerShot A1000 IS. It will let me

I have a Canon PowerShot A1000 IS. It will let me view the photos I've saved onto my card, but when I try to take a picture all that shows on the screen is complete darkness. I tried taking a picture anyway but in playback the picture is black as well. All the other functions seem to be working correctly. I believe that something is obstructing the lense inside the camera. Can this be easily repaired.

SOURCE: canon powershot SD 100 - I can't see anything but a black screen

This problem is caused by a stuck shutter assembly. Normally the shutter is open which allows light to enter the image sensor and show you the live preview you see on the screen. When you take a picture the shutter closes which allows the image sensor to record what was seen at the exact moment the shutter closed. The shutter is stuck closed, causing the image sensor to always be in the dark. These shutter assemblies are extremely small and delicate. The miniature parts can become jammed with just the slightest bit of oil or contaminant, or the slightest misalignment of components. The problem can sometimes be fixed by gentle tapping of the camera on a solid surface. If you are going to try this be VERY careful, and do not tap the camera on the buttons, lens, or battery door. If this does not solve your problem then the camera is going to have to be taken apart and the shutter cleaned and reset to allow free movement. This repair costs $125 to $145.

SOURCE: Blank black screen for my canon powershot S1 IS digital camera

This is a common problem with S1 IS and it is caused by faulty CCD sensor. Note that you can playback captured images without any problem but in capture mode all you get is blank screen. Will have to go to Canon but note that Canon repairs these models free of charge when it is the CCD sensor that stops working.

The button you press to focus and snap picture does not work at all. At first I was having a problem with it not wanting to focus. Now I can't take a picture at all.
Is this a matter of replacing one thing or more? Is this something worth fixing? Should I just get a new camera? I am just not sure what to do.
Thanks for your help.

How to put pictures from a computer onto poweshot a480 camera?

First of all, if you've edited the pictures in any way (opening a picture in a photo editing program and then saving it without making any changes counts as editing) then the camera most likely won't be able to display the images.

You can transfer files (not just pictures) to the memory card using a card reader. Plug the card into the reader and it will appear to your computer as another hard drive. Simply drag-n-drop files to it the same way you copy other files on your computer.

Installed 16gb sd memory stick. took 1682 pics and the first 1000 "disappeared".How do I retrieve them?

Did you format the card in your camera before you started taking pictures? If not, that's why this happend as the file structure was not setup. But no sweat. First you'll need to recover your lost photos, and also save/backup all of your photos onto your computer. You'll likely need to use recovery software. Here's some very good freeware. Now AFTER you've saved all your photos onto your computer, format the card in your camera to rejuvenate it, and properly setup the file/folder structure to prevent this from happening again. Note that this will erase the card, so only do this after you've saved/recovered all the photos onto your computer.

What if I can't seem to get the photos off my

Recommend that you use a CF card reader instead of trying to download directly from the camera. It'll save you aggravation in the long run (it's much faster, reliable, and doesn't use your camera's batteries). Here's one I highly recommend. But if that is too costly, they can also be very inexpensive (as seen here). You remove the CF card from your camera, and insert it into the reader. Then just plug the reader into a USB port on your computer. Your card shows up as a drive, that you can just copy and paste the pictures onto your hard drive.

My canon A480 powershot has hundreds of pics on it. I went to look at them this morning and now only 14 remain .. how can i get them back .. ??

Jessica, this occurred because you didn't intitially format the card in the camera when you first got it. It will work fine at first, but eventually what you experienced will happen. But you don't want to format your card just yet as it will erase it.
Instead, to recover your photos, you'll need to use a card reader with your computer to see if the files can be copied directly and saved to your computer. If you don't already have a reader, don't fret as they are very inexpensive. For example, here's one that I use that is very good. You may also purchase card readers at your local store, such as W or K mart, but they may be a bit more expensive at brick and mortar stores. With the card reader, you insert the card into the reader, then insert the reader into your USB port. The card then shows up as a hard drive, that you can copy and paste the missing photos from onto your computer. Also recommend using the reader in the future to download your photos from your camera, as it is very fast and relatively error free.
Now if by chance your photos still don't show up with the reader, don't fret as they're still there on the card. You'll just need to use recovery software with your reader to get them. It's very easy, here's a listing of very good freeware for that purpose.
Finally AFTER you've recovered your photos, format the card IN YOUR CAMERA using the camera's format feature. This will rejuvenate the card so it will be good as new, but it will also erase it. So again, only do this AFTER you've recovered the photos.
Good Luck!

I have a canon powershot A1000 recorded a 10 minute video and can't transfer to pc??

You will nearly always run into problems trying to download very large file (such as that 10 minute video) using the download cord that came with your camera. But please see this article, as it describes the use of an inexpensive card reader as a much easier, faster, and less error prone way to download your photos, and especially videos. In fact there are several important reasons discussed in the article for using a card reader vice downloading from the camera. USB Card readers are also very inexpensive these day, with cost virtually not an issue.

Writing from pc to memory card in camera

Go with the obvious solution. The camera only lets the computer read the card and delete pictures. It does not let you write to the card.

Be aware that if you've edited the photos in any way (opening a photo in a photo editor and then saving it without making any changes counts as editing) then the camera may not display the picture.

Lost my Canon PowerShot A560 disk

As a solution I highly recommend that you forego the old cable to the camera route, and instead consider a card reader to download your photos to your computer. Card readers are very inexpensive, much much faster downloading photos from the camera, do not use the camera's batteries during download, and are much less prone to file corruption of the photos during the download.

You place the camera's card in the reader, and your computer sees it as a hard drive. You simply copy/paste or drag/drop your photos onto your hard drive. For all of these reasons, most professional photographers utilize card readers exclusively. Really, you'll save yourself a lot of headache. Here are some examples from Amazon. Also, don't be fooled by the cost. some of the cheap ones work just fine. Go by the reviews. Also make sure you get a reader that is stated capable of reading your card (particularly if you have an SDHC card):

For international readers, here's another source for card readers (free international shipping too :-)
