Have you put the sata cable from your drive to your motherboard in upside down? if your not sure turn it around and see if it works.
Remember thumbs up if this works.

Was the new drive new or new to you, you have to use the same version or newer the older versions won't work, if its not that this sounds like a laser issue on both not a drive key issue, you can change the laser strength setting, if you want to give it a try on your original one, replace the key, there are 2 very small screws on the back of the laser, mark the top of the screws with a marker pen, then turn screws a quarter of a turn left, see if this works, if it does not, turn back to centre than try a quarter of a turn right, if this don't work you have not lost anything because you would have scrapped that drive anyway.

Comment or thumbs up if this works.

I've got an older style XBOX 360 that quit playing game & movie discs.

The diode in the lens has gotten too weak to put out enough voltage to read the game discs. I'm assuming that you have the original drive board still in your system.
you can find another lens on eBay really cheap, here is 3 links because the x box 360 consoles use 2 different lenses. On one of them the connecter for the worm gear mounts on the top, the other mounts from the bottom of the laser

Alright, So I have 2 xbox's witht he rrod. I took them apart. and accidently put the wrong disc drives back in the system. so i swapped it out, and now the original disc drive doesnt work with it either....

If you replace the same drive with the same P.C. board back in
the original console you should be good .Provide that the drive is
or was good before you took it apart ( read games) also when
attempting a generic fix it kit ( washers and screws ) and over
heating G.P.U. you can create new problems .What ever you do
DO NOT GO ON LINE with a different drive or your console you
will be band for LIFE !! If you wear successful with your repair
your drive should boot right up . a good drive in the wrong console
will post a white screen to put a 360 game in the console.
Did you just replace the heat sink compound or do a full x clamp
mod ??

Wont read games only reads dvds

This is going to be a bit long -- but very detailed, so please read it carefully. There are several reasons that an xbox 360 system will have problem reading discs. The error messages also vary from unreadable disk, no message at all but the game skips, "please insert disc in a 360 console" to "open tray." There are a few reasons this may happen:

1.Bad disc. Check the back of your disc for scratches. If it looks good (or plays fine in another console), then the disc is probably fine. Also-- try more than 1 game to be sure.

2. Bad laser. The XBox 360 has a DVD drive very similar to a PC's DVD drive inside. The drive contains a bunch of parts including a few motors and gears and a laser. The laser is the part that actually reads the disc. The reality is...with all the hours and hours of game play, lasers do eventually wear out. The laser isn't very easy to replace, but it is replaceable. You can find any and all XBox 360 lasers at the following website:

http://store.richspsxparts.com/xb360ac.html

3.Bad DVD Drive. Sometimes other components inside of the DVD drive can become bad such as the motor that spins the disk, the motors that open the tray, etc, etc. You can get a new DVD drive to just replace everything, including the laser, in one shot but there is a catch. The XBOX 360's DVD drive is tied to the motherboard using a software lock. The easiest way to overcome this lock is to buy the exact same manufacture DVD drive that is in your system now, remove the circuit board from the old DVD drive (which contains the software key) and transfer the circuit board into the new DVD drive that you purchase. If you do this simple procedure, there is no flashing involved. The following website carries DVD drives and also provides instructions on swapping the circuit board from the old drive into the new one.

Xbox 360 Pro : To Play This Disk Error

Unfortunately , a new xbox360 game cant be played in a normal xbox (not xbox 360)

The problem is that the new xbox is way different on the inside than the original xbox is. Because it is way more powerful, you can put an old xbox game into a 360, and it will work fine (most of the time), but if you try the reverse there is no way to make it work.
