Hi there. Whether this is someone you know, or a suggested friend by Facebook, or even a stranger that has contacted you, the way to block them is as follows:-

Find them, by searching for them in the box at the top of your homepage, finding them on your wall posts, or a comment by them on something you've read (i.e. a page you both share). When you get to their homepage / profile, scroll all the way down to the bottom of their page - on the left hand side, the bottom option (in blue) is "report/block this person", click on that and follow the instructions for why.
