Thankyou Muktar, your response was quite detailed an easy to follow, very much appreciated for your time.Top rated. But perhaps i should have put a bit more detail in.This printer was orginally on my neighbours computer.Recently i lent him a computer of mine running xp sp3.The cartridge errors were showing up on his computer ,same as on reloading printer onto my computer.I had read manual an used as advised, distilled water an a coffee filter (flint free)to very gently clean copper area on cartridge.reloaded, still same error message.Had tried all up a genuine HP 27 new an a generic to HP 27.What about a partial reset?Had read somewhere about turning off printer, holding both hash an 3 together while turning on machine.Anything else i can try to sort this out?

Check to see if the installed cartridge is the correct one for the printer. if the cartridge is the proper part number, remove the ink cartridge and make sure all the packaging tape has been removed from the copper circuitry strip on the backside of the cartridge. Reinsert the cartridge and try printing again.
If the error continues, remove the cartridge again and clean the copper circuitry strip on the backside of the cartridge, and the contacts inside the printer, by following the instructions below:
1. Use a clean, dry, soft, lint-free cloth. Locate the copper-colored circuitry strip on the back of the cartridge.
2. Wipe the copper-colored strip with the dry cloth. Use an upward motion, from the nozzle end to the top of the cartridge. Do not wipe the nozzle end of the cartridge or touch the nozzle plate. Wipe the contacts only once.
3. To clean the printer contacts, carefully look for fibers or contamination on the electrical contacts inside the carriage assembly, but do not wipe the printer contacts with any object. The contacts in the printer can be damaged if too much pressure is applied during a wiping process. Try to remove any visible attached debris within the carriage assembly by gently pulling the debris off with your fingers. If the carriage contacts show noticeable damage, contact the HP Customer Care Center listed in the printer's User's Guide.
Reinsert the cartridge and try printing again. If the error continues, the cartridge may need to be replaced.

Have a nice day and do not forget to rate please...!

I keep getting a msg saying carterage error on my printer

If you DID NOT use a HP cartridge you get the error message.
If you did use a HP cartridge. Unplug the printer. Wait 2 minutes.
Plug in the printer. If same error message. Remove cartridge and reinstall. Make sure no clear tape is left on cartridge contact face.

The printer is showing a message catridge error - Refer to device documentation to troubleshoot.

This is an internal electrical malfunction within the cartridge - I suggest you run the following two service tests:
1) You can 'temporarily' bypass an 'Incompatible Cartridge' error (or any other cartridge electrical malfunction error for that matter) by accessing the OJ's service menu...see the Inkjet411.com support youtube video found here:

HP Officejet J4500 J4600 4500 Cartridge Error Bypass -- HP 901 Cartridge Errors: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4-m_RLdRE4

2) You can also run the 'tap 41' diagnostics check on the HP 901 cartridge(s) electrical health, via the access code/procedure shown in the following video:

My hp officejet j4580 says incompatible black ink cartridge

I've been in print cartridge hell since I bought a J4580.

I spent an hour on chat with HP customer service and was able to resolve the problem by partially resetting the printer. Here's how:
  • Make sure your print cartridges are installed.
  • Unplug the machine, wait 20 seconds
  • Press and hold the # and 3 keys
  • Plug the machine back in
  • You'll see a reset message on the machine, release the # and 3 keys
  • Follow the prompts to set the language and location
Cross your fingers, hopefully your printer will print now!
