Question about RCA Thomson Digital Cable Modem (DCM305R)

1 Answer

I have an RCA DCM305R cable modem with usb and ethernet connection ports. The ethernet port is listed as "inactive" when I ran the diagnostic program on the modem. The usb port works fine. My isp told me that the signal to the modem is strong. How can I activate the ethernet port on my modem?

Hello.

Sounds like either your Ethernet cable or Ethernet port is faulty.

Hope this helps.

I have a modem arris cm450b, i bought splitter to use 2 cables but the the cable connected to my sons computr isn't working

That is not the right way to do it. Connect one computer to the cable modem using an USB A/B cable from the USB port on the modem to an available USB port on the computer and connect the second computer to the modem Ethernet port-to-Ethernet port using an Ethernet cable (probably the modem came with one Ethernet cable).

Hope this helps.

  5. Select a network port in the list of port to configure it.
  6. Click Advanced..., then click the TCP/IP tab.
  7. Follow your ISP's instructions for setting up this pane. For more information, see Mac OS X: How to Connect to the Internet With Cable or DSL.

  1. Save your work and shut down your PC.
  2. Connect the coaxial cable from the coaxial jack in your wall to the coaxial port on the rear of the modem. Turn the connector clockwise until the cable is firmly connected to the modem. Gently tug on it to make sure it is connected.
  3. Connect the appropriate cable, USB or Ethernet to the matching jack on the rear of the modem. Connect the other end of the cable to the appropriate port on your computer.
  4. Connect the modem's power adapter to a surge suppressor or a dependable wall socket.
  5. Press the power switch on the front of the modem to turn it on. Power up your PC. If you opted to use the USB connection method, you may have to install the appropriate drivers. Check your owner's manual for specifics.
  6. Launch your web browser http://192.xxx.xxx to verify Internet access.

I have a RCA Thomson DHG 535-2 without the disk for the installation and the ethernet wont help everything is hooked up etherent/cable to tv power yes... and that's about ti all im really missing is the...

Thomson Cable modem has an ethernet connection...
The ethernet connection goes to your computer via a standard Cat5e patch cable. There is no USB that I know of...
Cablevision wire goes to the modem. It should be the first device on the cablevision wire. If you need a splitter, it needs to be a GOOD one, connected DIRECTLY to the incoming Cablevision wire as it enters the house. Use good copper wire.

Order of events:
Connect the cablevision wire to the Modem.
Connect the Ethernet cable to the computer and the modem.
Power on the cable modem.
Right click the network Icon near the clock and click 'repair' (Or reboot the computer)
Apply for and get an account for cable Internet from your Cable company.
After a few days, cable Internet should work.

Trouble connecting netgear wireless router to rca modem DCM425

First try connection the Yellow ethernet cable from the rca modem to your computer's network connection. If you get a connection this way, then your modem will work with a ethernet cable. If not, then call Comcast for help. The modem ethernet out to computer port must be connected to the wan line of the router. Then you can connect an ethernet cable from your computer network connection to one of the 4 ports of the router. For wireless connections you must set up the router and wireless adaptor with the same settings to connect. Follow the routers directions.
Good Luck

DHG535-2 and LAN switch issue

It sounds like the LInksys that they replaced was also a router. A router will route packets to multiple pc's that are connected to it. The cable modem just sees the router as 1 pc. When you use a switch, the cable modem will see all of your PC's. and Comcast just allows 1 pc. You will need to buy a router to use more than 1 PC which will be cheaper than using Comcasts Home Networking service which will network up to 4 pcs

Ethernet vs. usb

FYI for those people trying to use a ethernet and usb cable from a cable modem - it may work for a while but it won't work forever - your ISP will only allow one IP address out of the modem unless you pay for additional addresses (then you need a switch). Each device you have on the modem is fighting for that IP and eventually it will just quit working (if it works at all).

If you want more than one computer on your network (on the Internet or sharing printers/files, etc) then you need a router or a gateway (cable modem/router combo which I DON'T recommend).

Can't get modem to work if I use the USB connection

Your computer is attempting to find the network connection through your LAN port. Your best bet is to reconfigure your network settings to seek its external network connection through USB, or better still, obtain a router(I personally recommend linksys wireless/basic routers due to stability), and simply use the ethernet connection through it. While this is bypassing the initial issue, it is also saving yourself a lot of hassle when it comes to retooling the PC's settings on the USB connection.
