Question about Texas Instruments TI-83 Plus Calculator

1 Answer

Openning the case of the TI 83 calculator

I took the screws out, and could force the sides of the case apart but couldn't find what was holding the 2 halves together (in the middle?)

The connect plug socket has come loose and falls inside the calculator, I just want to glue it in place.

Are you certain that the batteries are facing the correct direction and have enough juice?

Additionally, try holding the 2nd key and then the /down/ key, that darkens the screen, while holding up lightens it.

My ti 83 will turn on when i press the clear thing but when i try to put something in nothing happens

Hi imagenius1,

You need to free up some memory. Try clearing your RAM memory. Your calculator should operate properly afterward.

Press [2nd] [MEM] [7] [1] [2]

If the steps above did not reset the memory to your Ti 83 family calculator try the procedures below.

Please be prepared to re-install the calculator's OS if you run through this process.

If you have a straight Ti 83 without the Plus or, Silver Edition label goto (Procedure 2) below. If your Ti calculator is a Ti 83 Plus or better goto (Procedure 1).

(Procedure 1).

  1. Try a new set of AAA batteries.

  2. Remove one of the AAA batteries. Press and hold the [CLEAR] key. While holding [CLEAR], reinsert the AAA battery and then turn the calculator on. The calculator should display the message "RAM Cleared". Release the [CLEAR] key and, then press [CLEAR] one more time to remove the message.

  1. Remove one of the AAA batteries. Press and hold the [DEL] key. While holding [DEL], reinsert the AAA battery and then turn the calculator on. The calculator should display "Waiting...Please install calculator software now". Follow the instructions for the TI-83 family or TI-84 Plus family to reinstall the calculator operating system.

  2. Steps to re-installing the operating system:
~Connect the TI Connectivity cable between the PC and the calculator.
~Click on Start >> Programs >> TI Tools >> TI Connect >> TI OSDownloader
~Follow the on-screen directions to reinstall the calculator's OS. If you could not install the new OS on your calculator goto step 4.

  3. Remove all of the batteries including the round lithium battery for 5 minutes. After the 5 minute period, reinsert all of the batteries and turn the calculator on. Adjust the contrast if necessary.

  4. If the above process did not reset your calculator. Try re-doing (Procedure 1) and, extend the time in step 4, by 5 minutes to 10 minutes before you put all the batteries back in the calculator.

(Procedure 2).

For a straight Ti 83 without the Plus or, Silver Edition label try the procedure below.

  1. Try a new set of AAA batteries.

  2. Remove one of the AAA batteries. Press and hold the [ON] key for 20 seconds. Reinsert the AAA battery and then turn the calculator on.

I have owned my TI-83 for many years now. I only used it while in high school. When I was out of school I took the batteries out of my calculator so it wouldn't corrode. I just took it out of storage...

TI calculators have an annoying habit of dimming the screen when the batteries are changed so that it appears as if the calculator isn't turning on. Turn the calculator on (or at least press the ON key). Press and release the 2ND key. Press and hold the Up-arrow key for a few seconds and see whether the screen becomes legible.

If this doesn't do it, please reply to this post and we can go on to the next step.

Ti 89 detected but couldn't get status

Hello,
Here is what the FAQ and Knowledge Base area of the TI site has to say about the problem you are having. Hope it helps.

How do I correct the error message "TI-83 Plus or TI-89 detected, but could not get status" using the TI Connect software for Windows®?

The Operating System (OS) will need to be updated on the TI-83 Plus family or TI-89 calculator in order for the TI Connect software to detect the status. Try the following procedure to install the OS from the TI-83 Plus and TI-89 Boot Screen. Make sure TI Connect 1.6 is installed on the PC.

If using a TI-89 calculator:
• Connect the TI Connectivity cable to the TI-89 calculator and the computer.
• Do not start the TI Connect software.
• Download the TI-89 v2.09 OS onto the PC's desktop.
**Force the TI-89 into the "Boot screen" (see instructions below)**
• "Press I to install..." (press the [9] key).
• Click on Start >> Programs >> TI Tools >> TI Connect >> TI OSDownloader.
• Follow the on-screen directions to install OS version 2.09.
The download should begin.
**Steps for Boot Screen:**
• Take one AAA battery out, press and hold down the [APPS] key while reinserting the battery to force device into the Boot Code screen.
• "Press I to install..." will appear.
Once the OS has completed installation, the TI Connect software will be able to detect the TI-89.

My TI-83 Plus appears locked up no flashing

Try [2nd], [MODE] or [2nd] [ON] or [CLEAR] or take out a battery, this won't erase anything whatsoever as long as you have the factory back up battery in it, which unless you took it out, don't worry, you have it

Sticky keys

Try running a flat-head screwdriver along the "seam"-line of the calcuator, that should pop it open.

It wont turn on

On TI-83 Plus and TI-83 calculators that have the newer flat screen (as opposed to the first generation TI-83 with the tilted screen):

1. Open the battery compartment cover
2. Install known working batteries
3. Using a voltmeter, insert probe ends into the holes right beneath the 2 center batteries and touch the circuit board on either side. One is a (+) side and the other is a (-) side, so both must be touched. Be careful to ONLY touch the copper square of the circuit board. If your voltage reads 0 or very low (1-2 volts) proceed to step 4. If your voltage reads about 6 volts, your problem lies elsewhere.
4. Using a voltmeter, insert probe ends on the bottom of the 2 outside batteries where the springs are visible. If voltage reads about 6 volts, proceed to step 5. If voltage reads 0, your problem is that the springs are not making good contact with the batteries due to corrosion or weak springs. You will need to clean them or get donor parts. Find a calculator with a broken screen that comes on and swap the back covers. Details on how to remove the back cover further on.
5. Using a T6 torx electronics screwdriver remove all 6 screws on the back and using a small phillips, remove the backup battery cover.
6. WARNING! Disassembling your calculator can cause unrepairable damage. Only proceed if you have no other options! Using a small flat electronics screwdriver, pry into the case on the side about 4 ridges up where there is a small hole. Pop both sides open and break case away from the bottom to the top- NEVER FROM SIDE TO SIDE. (Going from side to side can damage the I/O port.)
7. Look at the copper squares at the bottom of the board. You can see where 2 springs make contact from the back cover. Often this is dirty, corroded, or the springs are weak and not making contact. Clean this area with alcohol and gently scrape away any oxidation.
8. Put calculator back together and test. When a calculator will not turn on, this is likely the culprit.

I have fixed several calculators with this method.
