Sounds like the safety switch on the lid is faulty.

My washing machine fills up with water but does not continue the wash cycle. Sometimes when you slam the lid the washer will continue the wash cycle to the end. Other times the washer stays filled up...

Sounds like the lid safety switch is either out of adjustment, or needs replacement.

Most washers will fill with the lid open, but no continue a cycle where the drum or agitator spin, unless it senses the lid is closed.

Washer wont opperate without lid being slammed or hit in the center of the lid. also wont which cycles without manually turning the knob. and just runs constantly on rinse wont switch to other cycles

Hello Mr. Robertson. With your computer go to 'Sears Parts' and search for your make & model. This site will provide the complete technical service manual including parts ID & pricing. Disconnect the AC power & hoses(prepare to catch the water spill from the hoses), get your tool box,(correcting the lid sensor switch position or replacing it, making a note on the color coded wiring of the controller) and spend the whole day disassembling, confirming what parts you need, gittin em, replacing em, puttin it back together, and savin the money to celebrate.

Fills with water then won't go to the wash cycle until you slam the lid several times

It sounds like the lid switch is faulty. The washer has a lid switch that checks to see if the lid is open, if lid is open the washer will not start the wash cycle. Check/replace the lid switch and you should be back in business.

STOPS IN MIDDLE OF CYCLE, HAVE TO OPEN LID AND SLAM IT TO COMPLETE CYCLE. ALSO AGITATOR DOESN'T SPIN WHEN WATER IS IN TUB.

A washer that fills and doesn't do anything, or stops right after the wash cycle and then does not advance to the rinse cycle and drain is commonly caused by a lid switch malfunction. The lid switch is usually mounted under the washer top casing, on the right hand side on most top load models. It is activated by a plastic piece on the lid (called a "Lid Strike") through a small hole on the rim of the wash tub opening. In many cases the lid strike breaks off the lid, or the lid switch becomes loose and no longer makes contact. Inspect the lid to make sure the lid strike is still intact, and then inspect the mounting screws (adjacent to the small opening on the wash tub rim) and make sure they are snug. If you determine the switch to be defective, the following link explains how to replace one:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385198-replacing_lid_switch

If the switch requires replacement, a new one can be purchased on line at searspartsdirect.com, pcappliancerepair.com, repairclinic.com, appliancepartspros.com. Just use your model number as your search criteria. All these sites offer competitive pricing, so shop all them for the best price.

NOTE: You do not have to drain the washer to complete this repair. Once the lid switch is adjusted or replaced, the water will drain. This will save you time in having to bail water.

PS Slamming the lid switch is not recommended. This will actually break the switch or bow the lid and make the problem worse over time.
