Question about Apple iPhone Smartphone
If you are at the home screen and then open itunes and it does not show the phone, then you may have to re-install Itunes.
Remove itunes from add/remove through control panel.
The go to music folder rename ituneslibrary.itl to ituneslibrary.itl.bak
Uninstall Apple device support rom control panel.
Re-install itunes with a lower version, if using FW 1.1.4 (itune 7.6). If on 2.0 + then Itunes 7.7.11 or higher.
Connect Iphone and should work now.
Incase you don't have anyting on screen and cannot turn the phone on, then probably you are into the restore or DFU mode. Google on how to jump out of recovery mode.
If all fails, then put iphone to DFU and do a restore or an update

Reinstall iTunes - quickest way to fix this problem. If this does not work, uninstall iTunes and Quicktime. Reboot. Reinstall iTunes.

I fixed it. 1-uninstalled iTunes on the desktop. 2-turn off iTunes. 3- connect iPhone to USB wire to computer. 4- turn on iTunes. It detects it now. Then use restore. (damn it did not work) - 5- from number 2 onward repeated again. This tome it was restored.
