Hot water tank leaks, big time, as it refills, stops dripping

Hot water tank leaks as it refills, stops dripping when I shut off inlet. Is it fixable? It is gas so I don't want to mess with it TOO much but seems if it is just a valve .......well....can't really afford a new one right now.

If the leak is from the tank itself, no you can not fix it. If it is a supply pipe and the leak is visible, in most cases yes. I would recommend you have this issue resolved very soon. If the tank has sprung a leak, it will be a matter of time before the leak becomes a flood.

Our commode isn't leaking, yet it refills many times a day

If your commode is refilling over and over, you may have a Ghost Flushing problem. Even though there's no water on the bathroom floor, you likely still have a slow leak somewhere in the tank. To locate and identify the source of the leak fill the tank and shut off the water to the commode. Remove the tank lid and draw a pencil line along the top edge of the water line. Leave the water turned off and go back several times and redraw the pencil line at the water line. When the water stops draining see where the water level is. If the water has stopped just below the overflow tube, you likely have a siphoning problem. If the water drains to the bottom of the tank you likely have a flapper problem.
To correct the siphoning problem reset the the depth of the fill tube in the overflow tube. Fill the tank up, shut the water off, and recheck after some time. Repeat these steps until the water stops draining.
To correct the flapper problem gently lift the flapper and clean the bottom of the flapper and the flapper seat. Refill the tank, shut the water off, and recheck later. If water still leaks replace the flapper.

Repair a cold water leak at the bottom of my water heater

Hi -

If your water heater is working (ie: making hot water) then most likely your heater isn't leaking. Rather, the leak is coming from the cold water supply and running down the tank where you see it at the bottom of the tank. A working tank that is leaking would produce a leak of hot water - not cold. You should carefully check the cold water piping for a leak, drip or stream of water and make the required repairs.

Black slim in hot water

SOUND LIKE YOU NEED TO DRAIN AND FLUSH YOUR WATER HEATER TANK. THERE IS A HOSE BIB AT THE BOTTOM OF THE TANK. RUN A HOSE FROM IT TO A DRAIN OR OUTSIDE. SHUT OFF THE COLD WATER INLET VALVE AND OPEN THE HOSE BIB. OPEN HOT FIXTURES IN THE HOUSE.CHECK THE DRAINING WATER FOR CLARITY. IF CLEAR OPEN THE INLET VALVE AND LET IT FLUSH(YOU MAY GET MORE DISCOLORED WATER, RUN UNTIL CLEAR). SHUT HOT WATER FIXTURES, CLOSE THE HOSE BIB AND LET TANK REFILL.

Hi, I have a Kenmore Elite Refrigerator model #596.76253702 that leaks water from the bottom every time the ice maker refills. The problem keeps getting worse since I purchased this product 2 years ago.

If it overfills and drips, look for an adjustment behind the plastic endcover with a +/- on it. - is less water.
If it continuously drips, replace the water inlet valve on the back where the house water supply comes in.

Ice maker water not stopping
The water inlet valve may be staying open. You can swap the wires on the dual water inlet valve and disconnect the water line at the valve which goes to the ice maker. When you try the water dispenser the water will come out there. When you stop the water dispenser, if the water at the valve doesn't stop, the valve isn't closing so you'll need to replace it. If it does stop after trying it several times then the problem is with the ice maker.

I have a MAYTAG legacy Series manine. That i just bought from a retailer. My machine is connected to a cold water tap. can i still get a hot water wash if i select a warm or hot cycle? Secondly,...

hello bz... there can be no hot water wash or hot cycle without hooking up a hot water supply line. Also, you must plug that hot water inlet, the correct plug is available at most hardware stores. Finally, yes it is normal for the machine to stop before draining, as the transmission shifts. If the machine is very noisy, that is not normal. To reduce that noise you could put the machine on a piece of thick carpet to deaden the noise a bit. Joe

Thanks for choosing Fixya!

I have a rheem 21v50 hot water heater and it is dripping from the spout on the side. How do I stop this slight drip?

Hi, W/D here.
What you are describing sounds like your t&p (temperature and pressure) safety valve, and resetting one involves some risk. You need to have a plan B if resetting it doesn't work.
Plan B: Locate the valve above the water heater. This is the cold water inlet. Locate the gas shut off knob.
We'll execute plan A. Make sure that we are talking about the t&p valve. It will have a tag attached to it, listing the maximum pressure and temperature for the valve. The valve will also have a lever on the top of the valve, attached to a pin.
Try tapping on the pin that the lever is attached to. These aren't hard knocks, but about the amount of force if you were hitting a tack with a small hammer. Just a few taps, then wait. If this seals off the leak, you're done. If not.....
Get a pair of gloves on before proceeding from here. What you can do is lift the lever on the t&p valve, letting some water discharge out the piping. Caution here, the water can be very hot, so you want to protect yourself. The intent here is to flush water through the seat of the valve, clearing any debris out of the valve so that it can seat properly. There are three positions that you can put the lever in, the ready position, which is it's normal position, partially opened, where you lift the lever until you get water, and locked open where you lift the lever and it stays open when the lever is about 90 degrees opened from the ready position. Get something to catch the water if you need to, Place a washcloth in the unbreakable container to reduce the amount of splash. With your gloves on, lift the lever slowly until you get a steady flow of water out of the valve, then release the lever. If this stops the flow, again, you're done.
If neither of these methods resolve the issue (tapping or flushing), then the valve will need to be replaced.
IF THE LEAK GETS WORSE: (Plan B): Close the water inlet valve to the heater described above, and shut off the gas control knob. Relieve the pressure off of the tank by opening a hot water faucet that is fed by this water heater.
Best regards, --W/D--

Hot water leaks into the washer when it is not running

This is usually caused by a water inlet valve leaking by. The following link explains how to diagnose the problem yourself and repair:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3753262-front_load_washer_fills_when_not_in_use

I've included parts sources (if required) and instructions on how to replace each component. These are very simple and inexpensive repairs that you can easily accomplish yourself.

If the model number is correct, the part number for a replacement valve is 8181694. The average cost is about $35.

If you have any questions, please post back and let me know. I hope this helps you.
