Hi.

  1. Turn on the computer. When the Compaq logo displays, press F10. Or,
  2. During Power On Self Test (POST), and after the memory check completes, press F10 as soon as you see a small white square flashing on the top right corner of the screen.
  3. In the computer setup, use the right arrow to move the selection to the Advanced menu.
  4. Use the down arrow to move the selection down to Boot options, and press Enter. The Boot options menu pops up with four boot order options.
  5. Use the down arrow to move the selection.
  6. Press the left arrow to change the order of Notebook.
  7. Press F10 to accept the change.
  8. Press ESC to jump back File menu, and then move the selection down to "Save changes and exit".
  9. Press Enter. If asked to save changes and exit, press F10.
On some laptops you can change the boot order by tapping the F12 key as the computer starts up.

I cannot boot from the cd rom to do a fresh install of windows xp onto the laptop (Toshiba Satellite 1805-S274 PC Notebook)

Most computers need to have the boot order reset in the Bios to enable booting from cd. The following should be the correct way to access the Bios setup for this model.

Starting with the system powered off (not in sleep/suspend or hibernate mode)-Start with the system powered off. Press the power button and then immediately press and hold the Esc key while the system runs the POST (Power On Self Test). When the POST finishes, a prompt will appear telling you to press the F1 key to enter BIOS Setup. At that time, press the F1 key to access the BIOS Setup program.

Once in the Bios setup, change the boot order to boot first from cd, then save changes and exit. You should then be able to run the cd install.

Can't install new OS

you need to install directly from the vista disc when the computer is powered on, put the disk in and it should ask you to press any button to start from cd..

if not then the computer is not set to start up from a cd, you can either enter the setup / bios to change that setting OR right when you power up the computer look at the screen it will say what button to press in order to enter boot menu, it will very likely be button F12 or similiar, it should say on the screen when you power on.

if it doesnt, then you need to go into the bios and change the boot order so that the computer starts from the CD first. the computer should say what button to press to enter bios or cmos or setup when its turned on

after that you should be able to start from the cd and install the OS (Operating system, eg.Windows)

heres some info on how to work the bios: http://www.whitecanyon.com/how-to-change-boot-order.php

ones you get into the vista setup you can empty the hard drive, getting rid of windows xp and then install windows vista over it.

Let me know how that goes,
Thanks,
Ekse

Secondary drive 0 not found

Hi there.
Sounds like the boot order has been changed in the bios.
The secondary drive sounds like the CD drive as most laptops only come with 1 HDD installed.
Change the boot order to the primary drive by Pressing F1 during startup when the ThinkPad logo is displayed..
Once in the bios change the boot order, save and exit, the computer will restart and boot from the hard drive, when you get into windows check to make sure that the CD rom recognizes CD/DVD's.
Please post back if you need any more help.

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa!!

Brand new notebook .. windows then, screen freeze..acer picture

This may require a "repair" of windows.

Get a Windows XP Operating system disk with the correct service pack that the notebook has installed (usually XP SP2).

1. Boot from it (put it in CD drive and restart the laptop).

2. If you still get the same problem start up, you need to set the laptop to boot from CD.

3. Restart laptop, press Delete key or F2, or F12 (it should say one of these on the screen) to enter the Setup. or another key to get "boot options"

4. In Setup (BIOS) Use Right Arrow to find the Boot Options. Use the instructions to move the CD-ROM to first position, above HDD (hard drive). Press Esc, then F10 to save your changes and exit.

5. The XP CD Rom should now run. It should come to a screen where you are asked to press R to repair windows.

6. When it comes to the command prompt, restart the laptop

Hopefully the laptop should boot OK again.

Os keep restarting. on boothing the laptop, the windows starts and the user interface loads. when ask for username and password, on entering the username and password, the laptop restarts.

Hi,

From my point of view I think the Operating system needs to be Repaired and below is a guide on how to repair
  1. Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order in the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. Check your system documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order.
  2. When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see the options below This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft
Windows XP to run on your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.
  3. Press ENTER to start the Windows Setup. DO NOT choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R", (you DO NOT want to load Recovery Console). I repeat, DO NOT choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R".
  4. Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.
  5. Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair. If Repair is not one of the options, END setup. After the reboot read WARNINNG #2
  6. Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot. Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears. Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact. After the installation is over the system will reboot.

Enjoy
