Question about LG RU-50PZ61 50 in. HDTV-Ready Plasma Television

1 Answer

Hello, we have a RU-50PZ61 LG 50" Plasma TV. It is about 4 years old. It developed problems with shadowing last fall. The service tech determined that it was a control board gone bad, 600$ later the board has been replaced and the picture is perfect. BUT! Now the TV just turns off on it's own for no rhyme or reason, and in no particular pattern. I have left it on all day and it doesn't shut off once and the next day it will be off most of the day and then when it is on it will turn off several times. So it is just a very random thing. Sometimes I can turn it back on and it will stay on and other times it won't turn back on. If I leave it off for 15 minutes or so then it will usually stay on for an hour or more. It has been in and out of the shop several times and it never turns off for them. I need to point out that the voltage has been tested by the serviceman and that is ok. It was plugged into a monster cable surge protector along with our Satellite DVR and VCR/DVD player as well as headphones my husband uses. NONE of the other devices turn off when the TV does - in fact my husband still gets sound from whatever program he was watching on the DVR after the TV shuts off. The TV is currently plugged into it's own outlet VS the surge protector - but both are plugged into the same electrical box - that part makes no sense to me - but I humoured the service man and let him leave it there. The TV is mounted above our gas fireplace - that we rarely use - and it was used before the problem developed but has not been used since. The TV was mounted above the fireplace in early September and other than the shadowing problem we had NO problems with it until it was taken off the wall and into the shop for repair. can't be a heat problem as it was on the wall for four months before the other repairs were made. Obviously it is not an electrical problem either as nothing else shuts off when the TV does. I am at my wit's end and this is truly an exercize in frustration for me. Does anyone else have this problem? Any one with any ideas/solutions? Oh yes, we did buy the extended service contract and the insurance is good til May 2011, otherwise I think we would have put the 600$ towards a new TV not repairs for this one. Warrantech has confirmed that the repairs were approved and that we will be reimbursed and they are aware that we are still having problems. Sorry this is so long, just wanted to avoid suggestions related to electrical or heat problems, as I truly believe that neither are the problem. Thanks, Lauri

Hello redryder - everything regarding the TV shuts down - picture as well as volume. I did mention that my husband could still hear the DVR program he was watching, but his headphones are connected to the dvr and vcr/dvd players. Any solutions you have are welcome. Where we are now is that the service shop will have it for a week or so soon when we go on vacation - to see if it will shut off for them. Thanks! Lauri

42" Plasma, no picture, sound

The best possible solution to your problem is to replace both sustain boards at the same time, The X and Y sustain boards. LG tech support recommends replacing the digital board as well when replacing their boards, even during LG's tech training seminars they suggest you replace all major boards for continued viewing enjoyment. But in my experience you should replace the X systain also, but make sure the Y you replaced is still good.

I believe that you are experiencing an intermittent problem with what's called your florescent lamp ballast. The best thing is that it can be repaired/fix. There should be a LG repair shop in your area. Cheaper to bring it in than have a service tech come to your residence.
Should be between $200 to $300 for a repair.

LG 50PX4DR plasma tv

call 877-543-8325 this is an LG Executive call center and they will fix this for free. I have a 50" plasma I bought january 2006 which is out of warranty by 5 months. They faxed me and the LG repair shop a 30 day warranty for my tv to cover the repair. Just tell them you heard a pop and in my case the picture is distorted. All they need is the model number and serial number and they should take care of it. No arguing needed.
