Question about Dell Inspiron 5100 Laptop

1 Answer

Hi, I have a dell inspiron 5100. I have two problems. 1) My screen is completely black and I have to use an external monitor. When I start my laptop, I can see the Dell Logo and after that is when it goes completely black and I am forced to use the external monitor. 2) The second issue is that my sound card / driver seems to have gotten corrupt. It was working fine until this morning. I listend to a you tube clip and it worked well. And then a few hours later, when I tried to hear some music, I got this awful distorted sound coming. Does not matter if I hear through speakers, headsets or the laptop itself . .. the sound is very faint and very very distorted. I raised the volume, I updated the driver, I uninstalled and reinstalled teh driver but of no avail. Please advise . . .

For your video problem, you may be stuck in a different mode try holding the Fn key and hit F8 this toggles through the modes
1 - LCD on laptop only
2 - LCD and external Monitor
3 - External monitor Only

if this does not work you may have a LCD issue with the laptop .. let me know how it goes first

You can try connecting an external monitor to see if you get a display on the external monitor. If so then you have a problem with Inspiron LCD screen or video circuit on the motherboard. Here is a link to the setup guide which has the location of external VGA connector on the back view:

So I'm turning on my inspiron 5100 and all i get is a white screen. It sounds like it's on but the screen remains blank white?

Hi Donny,

A white screen usually means the LCD panel has failed/worn out. Here's an easy way to make sure. Get your laptop to an external monitor, whether at your home or a friend's place, and with the laptop off and the external monitor off, connect the monitor video (vga) cable to your laptop. Turn them both on and then on your Dell laptop hold down the fn key down in the bottom left hand corner of the keyboard and press the F8 key up at the top. That transfers the video signal to the external monitor.

If the external monitor shows your laptops normal desktop and icons, then you know for sure the LCD screen on your laptop is worn out. If you get the same white screen on the external monitor, it means the video card/controller on the motherboard of your laptop has worn out and you can move ahead with deciding on repairs or other options.

Good Luck.

PS....if the F8 key doesn't transfer the video signal. look at all the F keys for one that says CRT or one that has a little picture of a monitor to transfer the signal.

Try this

You might also try an external monitor and see if you get any video that way (Fn+F8 toggles to enable external video)

My screen on my Dell Inspiron Notebook went black. But I can barely see on the screen that the computer ran a problem check and said my computer was having a problem starting.

The invertor lamp has gone bad, so you would need to replace the LCD screen. there is nothing else you can do. try to connect an external monitor adn then press Fn + F8 to switch the video to the external monitor. if the image on the external monitor is fine then its the lcd. if the external monitor has the same image then motherboard problem. you can also try Fn + Up arrow key to increase the brightness.

If the laptop keeps working, and you can use it on an external screen, then it is likely an hardware fault.

First perform a complete system recovery, like probably already instructed by the Dell support helpdesk. This will practically exclude the possibility of a driver or system problem.

If the problem is hardware , then you may have a faulty inverter board , a bad LCD display/LCD ribbon connection, or a faulty video adapter (integrated with motherboard).

If the problem is the inverter, then the screen will go dark, and the laptop will keep working on external display. This is probably your case.

If the problem is LCD display or ribbon cable, then the display will be blank with light on , and the laptop will keep working on external monitor.

Fault concerning video adapter usually cause the the system not to work at all, and it is uncommon under conditions described.

Before you can think of fixing it, ask yourself what is there to fix.
open your laptop check for any broken parts on the board if its fine which i highly doubt also check whether any broken piece got into the fun. And for the monitor connect an external monitor and see what happens.

Can you hear the Windows startup noises but can't hear it?

Does it work plugged into an external monitor? (Any good CRT or flat screen should work.

Be sure to plug in the screen before you turn it on.
If it doesnt output to the LCD automatically you may have to hit FN-F8 to switch to external.

If it works on external monitor you are just dealing with a screen problem of some sort - either a bad inverter or backlight in the LCD most commonly...
