Question about E-Machines eMachines Desktop PC

1 Answer

My friends computer has a virus. She uses Avast Antivirus which I've always had good luck with. Her computer is an Emachine with windows XP operating system. Avast found a virus after running a thorough scan but it didn't seem to help. Alot of pop up windows and things saying that her computer is infected but it is not Avast or windows defender saying it. Plus, for some reason all of her restore points have been wiped clean. Any ideas on how to fix or get rid of the virus?

Well I used the Antimalware and it seemed to clean up alot of the infected files but the problem with pop up windows and security alerts are still persisting. So I'm still not sure what to do. I don't think they can afford a technician and I'm far from one. Is it possible to back up some files and reformat the hard drive? I'm just afraid that that will back up the spyware or virus too. Plus, something odd is happening. They have 2 user profiles on their computer. When they use the one that was not being used at the time of the infection, everything looks and seems fine. Is it? Is it possible to just delete the infected user profile? Thanks for any assistance.. It is greatly appreciated!

It may not be a virus. It sounds more like a bad case of spyware. You may want to download, install, update, and run something like Malwarebytes AntiMalware. It sounds pretty serious, so it may need the attention of a PC technician to fully remove the infection.

Hope this helps!

If the popups are still persisting, your options are to get an expert tech on it or, as you said, reformat it. Personally, I wouldn't trust that deleting the infected account will delete the infection itself. Obviously you can try it and see if it holds up. In the meantime, I would definitely back up all important files. To minimize the risk of re-infection from those backed up files, you should probably scan them with MBAM (what you used before) and a good antivirus program such as AVG. Avast is a good free one, too, but in my experience, AVG has been much more reliable.

By the way, my company has very affordable service options ($24.95 per month for unlimited service) if you ever need an affordable technician. It's all done remotely and the techs are all from the U.S.
Check it out if you get a chance:

Anyway, if you do decide to format, be sure to get that antivirus and anti-spyware protection installed and updated right after XP is reinstalled. I hope it works out either way : )

You can try AVG anti-virus software
http://free.avg.com/us-en/homepage
http://www.avira.com/en/avira-free-antivirus
Only warning I have is AVG may interfere with Itunes. However, that problem may have been fixed in the past year. Check with Apple. They are aware of the conflict.

You should have an antivirus program always running on your computer. If you have one it should be able to get rid of the virus. If you don't have one or you have one but it can't get rid of the virus, try AVAST. It is free at http://www.avast.com. Once you install avast, it will want to run a sweep before your computer restarts. That is the best way to get rid of a virus, before the virus is activated.

I need a good internet security program that ISN'T Norton

Wow, this is a big answer. There are many free virus protection programs but I've compiled a list of free, great quality, and awesome protection anti-virus programs for your solution.

Free Anti-Virus:
  • Windows Defender
  • Ad-Aware
  • PC Tools AntiVirus Free Edition
  • AVG Anti-Virus Free
  • Avira AntiVir Personal - Free AntiVirus

In addition to the collection of anti-virus programs I would recommend some cleaning and analyst programs to speed up your computer.

Cleaning & Analyst Utilities:
  • CCleaner
  • Defraggler
  • Recuva
  • Speccy
I'm sure you'll be happy with these programs. Have fun and always use protection!

Thanks,
