I believe the proper term is "Sealed System" That term refers to the compressor, evaporator and condenser coils, and the tubing that connects it all. If the compressor runs, and chills at all, the unit should be repairable. Has this unit been serviced previously? Who told you that it couldn't be repaired?

All you need to do is replace the rtc overload contactor on the compressor body, this part supplies power to the start windings of the compressor and after the compressor is running it switches the electrics to the run windings,if it is defective it will sound as if the compressor is running but only on the start windings and will be quite warm and is actually not running to full speed and this will cause your cooling problem, sealed systems rarely leak out their refrigerant

Freezer cold, refrigerator wont get cold what can be the cause of this

lack of air flow from freezer to the refrigerator, since you have a side by side, this narrows it down a little. it could be not automatically defrosting, visual sign is thick frost on back wall of freezer, due to either a bad: main control board; defrost heater; evaporator thermistor; or safety bimetal thermostat. could also be a bad evaporator fan motor, due to a bad motor; bad main control board, or both. air damper is stuck closed, preventing air from entering fresh food side. or ice build up due to an improper door seal or other warm air source.

My refrigerator wont get cold and it is on the highest temperature possible the freezer is working fine. its still makeing ice but its just that the refrigerator wont get cold. its also 10 years old.

Always set the controls to their "normal" recommended setting. Changing them will not work. Is there air blowing from the freezer? The freezer fan may not be working. Or if it is, possibly the air flapper could be stuck closed not letting air flow into the refrigerator.

If the fan is running you more than likely have a defrost problem.
look at the back wall of the freezer section if it is frosted up. it's not defrosting.
There three components in this system. The defrost heater, the defrost termination stat., and the defrost timer. Newer refrigerators do not have a timer per say it is build into a electronic board usually mounted on the back of the refrigerator under a metal plate. The termination stat is the cheapest part @ $ 25.00. The heater should run @ 50.00 to 70.00. The board could be as much as 200.00 or more. If the refrigerator is over 10 years old you may wish to look into getting a replacement. Appliances are designed to start failing after 10 years old.
My opinion.
If you unplug the refrigerator let it defrost then plug it back in. it will work properly about 3 days before it frosts back up.
hope this helped. Good luck

Check the back wall of the freezer for snow on it. If present you have a defrost problem which will reduce or cut off air to cool the refrigerator section.
