Kenmore Elite Refrigerator error er dh (by 9 users)

posted by medeer on Feb 19, 2008

the refrigerator portion is not really cooling like it used to and the error message of "er dh" shows on the display for a couple of weeks now. It will only go away for a few minutes if you unplug it and plug it back in and then it will return. I've read online that the defrost sensor may need to be replaced. Sears on the phone doesn't seem to know what I'm talking about or locate the part that I would need. Any help? Is the defrost sensor called something else? If I order and try to replace this part, is it hard to replace and will it most likely fix the problem?

I've been there, but what is the defrost heater listed as on this website?

Comment by medeer, posted on Feb 20, 2008

The error code "er dh" is not in the manual anywhere. I searched online and found something say that it may be the thermistor or the defrost sensor. The sears service repair person said that it may be the damper between the freezer and the refrigerator area or the fan that pushes the cool air into the refrigerator area may be causing the refrigerator area to not be getting enough cool from the freezer area. I broke down and have the service guy come look at it. I was trying to avoid it, but can't really get a straight/definite answer on what it could be causing the problem. It's a little over a year old (of course, right after my warranty is no longer in affect). There is no ice anywhere. The freezer is on the bottom. As far as I know it's electric control. What other type of control is there? It has the electronic control/display on the left side door of the refrig. with the water dispenser. There is no ice dispenser in the door.

Well, I guess I'll find out what the problem is as soon as the service guy gets there and looks at it. He's on his way right now.

The service guy said that his computer said that the defrost sensor needed to be replaced. He gave me the part # 6615JB2005H, which on searspartsdirect.com comes up as a controller assembly for $11.99. He was going to charge me $58.46 for the part and about $90 for labor and $55 for the service call fee... for a total of $205.63. Instead, I paid him for him his $55 plus tax for him to tell me something that I already new by looking on the internet. What I didn't know was the actual part number for the defrost sensor. I'm ordering the part myself for $11.99 plus shipping and installing it myself. I'll let you know how hard it was afterwards, but it doesn't sound or look that bad according to what he told me and what I can tell from the diagram on sears website. I just wanted to make sure anyone else with this problem doesn't have to spend the money and time trying to find out what the er dh error message means and then trying to figure out what the part # is for the defrost sensor. Thanks for your help.

Thanks, but I already have the manuel.

For a total of $11.99 plus shipping for the part I found online and a total of 20 minutes, my husband and I replaced the defrost sensor (i.e. controller assembly listed on Sears parts direct). It is now working again, cooling the refrigerator part again like it used to and no more "er dh" error. Of course I had to pay the sears tech $55 + tax for his trip to hook up his computer to it and tell me the actual part number for the defrost sensor because the sears parts people didn't know what that was. But at least I didn't end up paying the tech over $200 to do it all. So, I guess at least I got it working right and I only had to pay about $85 (tech trip + part + expedited shipping).

I hope this information can help anyone else with this problem because there wasn't much help finding out that the defrost sensor is really called the controller assembly.

Medeer,
Thank you so much! We had same problem with our 2 year old fridge and followed the advice on this page. I ordered the part, took apart the freezer to pop out the back panel and plugged in the new part. Took about an hour, but saved us lots of time and money! Thank you so much for sharing! this really should be a recall part and the solutiom should be on the Kenmore site.

We bought our fridge in November '06. The ER DH message showed up in May, but the temperature in the refrigerator seemed to be okay - until this week. I've done the unplug and plug back in routine and it maintains for 4 or 5 hours.

As of this week, the temperature is definitely not maintaining, which is why I came looking. I've sent an email to Sears strongly suggesting that this is NOT an out-of-warranty issue, it is a RECALL issue. Maybe they just got a batch of bad chips, but the number of folks just in this little corner indicate that they are aware and it should not be our problem.

If they don't come through this week, I'll buy the part and do the install. I'll let you all know how it goes.

Thank you medeer, I had the ER DH error code, my refrigerator began to warm up. I ordered part # 6615JB2005H for $11.99 from sears, took off the bottom freezer door, removed all components from inside the freezer including the rails screwed into the right side of the freezer so that I could remove the back panel from inside the freezer. Located the assembly which is simply pluged in with a locking connector, and pulled out the two probes inserted in the grill. Took me about half an hour, but my Kenmore has been running just fine. Guess I'll order another assembly for when it fails again

Great advice from medeer, I had the same ER DH error code, and my refrigerator began to warm up. I replaced the defrost thermostat assembly part # 6615JB2005H which is located inside the freezer, on the right side behind the white plastic panel. I accessed it by removing the freezer door, all components inside the freezer, and the tracks mounted on the sides of the freezer. Be careful when removing the white panel because a fan is mounted to the left side of the white panel and plugs into the back left side of the freezer compartment.
Found the green technical data sheets under the refrigerator in a small plastic bag near the front.
My refrigerator is 20 months old, just a few months past the warrentee,

I had the same problem with my fridge. I have a Kenmore Elite 795 series, which is actually made by LG. It's a bottom drawer freezer model. I kept getting the error "567" on the freezer portion.

The Sears technician said that the defroster chip PCB Board had died and the whole board needed to be replaced. Sears was charging $440 for the board, plus $176 for labor. I declined and managed to change the board myself in 10 minutes with a new board that I found online for $220.

I'm in the process of defrosting the fridge so I'll let you know if it works. If it doesn't work, then it might be the defroster sensor.

Comment by tech17, posted on Feb 20, 2008

ok this is defrost 101 ok the defrost systems has three componets the defrost timer or adc the defrost thermostat or sensor depending on the unit most electronic control models have thermistors and a defrost heaters which is a glass element or an element like is in your stove that runs through the evaporate which is the aluminum honey comb looking piece under the back panel in the freezer now the freezer does all the cooling for the unit via a fan in the freezer but defrost might not be your problem any time the compressor running the fan in the freezer should be running too now i need to know two thing is you model electronic control is the freezer on the bottom and how old is your unit pull the bottom kickplate on and see if a piece of paper there we are looking for a tech sheet that should be on the unit some where kenmore dont build their stuff and do you kmow what the dh codes mean are they in your manuel

Comment by tech17, posted on Feb 20, 2008

im not sure you have a defrost promblem if you dis then i beleive your whole unit wouldnt be cooling by now where tdid you find the dh code and what does it mean

Comment by tech17, posted on Feb 20, 2008

well maybe but don't pay him if he don't fix it sears are poorly trained for the most part for real if he don't fix it don't pay him i got a manuel ill send you and we can fix it i cant find no dh code but i don't think is a defrost problem do you hear a fan running when you open the door if not push the light switch in and see if you do

Comment by tech17, posted on Feb 20, 2008

you got an owners manuel or a service manuel most of the sears tech ive run into in the Field are poorly trained or not trained there are no schools for appliance repair except one that Whirlpool has started you have to learn from some one that knows they rely on their computers for the call they run sears doesn't have any factories and don't build their own appliances most likely yours is a whirlpool or kitchen aid if you e mail me ill send you a service manuel that i believe is your unit now in the bottom of your freezer do you see any frost build up on the back wall is your ice melting in the freezer is your ice cream soft how long you been getting this code the only way to know for sure is to pull the back panel off the freezer look at the evaporator and see if its covered with heavy frost now with a defrost problem the refrigerator goes first then the freezer quites cooling you ice melts the ice cream gets soft etc im not some joker on the internet i was a frigidaire factory tech for 12 years then ran my own company for 6 till i got disabled email me at b4829@yahoo.com and ill send you a service manuel or not its up to you but if your stuff in the freezer is staying frozen i doubt its a defrost problem get a temp reading off the freezer and if its in the minus i doubt its a defrost problem like i said the only way to know for sure is to pull the cover off the back coils and see if they are frosted up so much that air cant get through them

i have an LG, same fridge as the Kenmore, I ordered the part for my fridge (same as your kenmore).

the ER DH error, is still occurring now.

thats with a new control assembly piece from sears direct.

When i pulled the rear panel off the fridge, the coil was pretty heavily frosted up. so it had to be that right?

Dont understand why this solution didnt solve my problem.

How do you fix the controller assembly? We have the ER DH code on the control panel. I will order the part but can someone tell me how to replace it?

Can you tell me exactly where the defrost sensor is located?
