ive just gotten an xps t500 ( i wouldnt choose dell, but its at work ).
anyay, it hangs when trying to probe devices.
Ive fiddled with kernel options, from all to none, and even taken out all
unessecary hardware.
no luck.
it installed fine on my p200, so i do know what should happen.
TIA,
Jon.

I've installed on a Dell XPS T550 (exact same hardware except a faster
CPU) with no problems.
I have had problems with systems hanging when probing IDE devices - this
was happening with some Seagate Medalist drives.
P.S. - nothing wrong with Dell. It's a generic Intel SE440BX2 motherboard
and other generic parts. You'll probably have a lot less trouble with it
than you'd have with something like a Compaq Presario, which is a lot less
generic.
