You will need to know what motherboard you have. Try running CPU-Z. Sometimes it will say, sometimes not depending on whether it recognizes the manufacturer or not. Once you know the make and model of the motherboard, you will be able to google the specs and see what CPU's it will take. http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

Did it display any video at all with boot options or HP logo? Any POST test or beeps after you started the laptop?
Try removing the power ac adapter and battery. then only boot it up with just the AC adapter (no battery).
