1 Answer

My son purchased this generator about a year and half ago and has used it very little. during a power outage we got it out and used it for a day and the circut board went out. shouldnt it have lasted longer than that? or if we over loaded it shouldnt it have tripped or something besides quitting? ugh!

That sux! Thats NOT acceptable in any way... Take it back and demand it gets repaired.. With devices such as this it is not the simple passing of time that ages it, but the actual POWER ON time... & Yes if Overloaded it should simply have "Tripped" a breaker or the like.

Choosing a home generator to use in the event of outages

if you can afford a real standby genset id get one of those. reasoning is this way you do not have to store gasoline and rotate it every few months. and if you have a backup style genset you may not be able to get fuel for it when your supply runs out. that and you have to hook it up when the power goes out. safely hopefully. they are sized depending on the size of your power needs. most places that sell them will come to your house and tell you what youd need. easy stuff

When we purchased our home in '04, it had a Dayton generator in the basement, model no. 3W056A, serial no. 55658 F83. It runs on natural gas, or so I've been told: It has never run since...

Let me make sure I read your post corerectly ... You have a Natural Gas operated generator hooked up in your basement? That's a train wreck waiting to happen! How is the exhaust vented out and how air tight is your basement? What keeps the carbon monoxide from reaching the rest of the house, when it's in operation?

Generators are a great back up. I have a 15 kw, that carries most of the house, plus 3 pumps during a power outage (Due to severe electrical storms, recently) we have had 2 power outages in 5 days. However, the National Building Code says "NO" to any type of generator being operated inside a residence or building of any type.

Without trying to sound critical, you need to rethink your plans of getting your generator running again. At least in your basement. Have it moved outside first and check with your local officials regarding clearances to any openings in the house. Or as you said "Just scrap it."

I sincerely hope this helps you make the right decision. Thanks for choosing FixYa.

Make sure the sparkplug is clean and gapped. Unloosen the float bowl slightly and drain about a half cup of gas out of the bowl. It is possible a little condensation got in to the fuel. Tighten the bowl nut slightly and try to start the generator.

Installed a generac 20kw about a year ago, ran fine untill 2 days ago. During a utility outage, generator ran for about 30 minutes and then stopped producing power while still running. All mains were still...

With the engine off, check the exciter brushes and slip rings which supply magnetic power for the alternator winding in the stator. Also, check the motor-to-alternator mechanical coupling. Check the breakers for tripping. To service beyond this point requires a schematic of the alternator, a voltmeter, plus knowledge of what the schematic is telling you. Good luck!

Won't start.

Hi raw 28:

ther gas that was in the carb probably evaporated. you might tryt a little spray starter fluid in the spark plug hole or in the air intake of the carb, This might just get it running long enough to draw gas into the carb and get it self sustaining,

Good luck Loringh

Coleman 6200 won't work

Hi Judy,
Generators DO last a good long time for the money, but they have to be both used and maintained in order to keep working properly. What has most likely happened is that you didn't use the generator at all for a year, after it sat on your dealers shelf for a few months not being used, and so the tiny bit of magnetism it uses to "kickstart" the process of making electricity has worn down. The good news is that this is easy for a generator shop to repair, no parts involved and the minimum labor that they charge. They need to do something called flashing the field of the generator. What they can't do is get Coleman to pay for it since they aren't around anymore, go ahead try the 800 number (waits patiently).

Be nice to the poor generator techs at the shop.
