Does the computer immediately return the discs after they're inserted or do you have to manually eject them? If it's trying to read the discs then there could be a problem with the type of disc. However if it just ejects the disc immediately, there could be a recognition problem. So, if your computer doesn't recognize that a disc is in the drive, you can check several things. 1. Check to see that the computer actually reads DVDs. To do this, open the System Profiler in the Utilities folder. Click on ATA/Devices and Volumes/Disc Burning. Those are three different options but each will tell you if the drive actually does run DVDs. If it shows DVDRW or DVD, but if it only shows CD or CD-RW, then it won't play a DVD. 2. If it shows that it accepts DVDs through the System Profiler, then you'll need to check to see if the actual drive is attached. You can open your computer through the battery with a screw driver. Once open, you'll need to check the connecting cable to the drive. If it's attached properly/securely, you may need to take it to a technician. The drive me be malfunctioning and need professional repair.

hi welcome to fixya.
it seems that the problem is a corrupted OS. do you have OS X DVD bootable disk installer that comes with your macbook? then insert that into a CD/DVD Rom on your macbook, then, press the power button to make a restart, while it is powering up hold down C key till you can see a window. Then goto utitlities and try to repair your HDD, this is also one of the way to retrieve your important files. Have patience, then restart after the repair process is complete. But if the problem still the same... just repeat the process but this time you have to reformat your HDD and install a fresh Operating System. If you're having a hard time of doing it, be free to bring it to the service center near you. they would be glad to serve you. Have a nice day!

Hi, When I switch my MacBook on, I can see a ? mark appears on the screen and that's all it would not any further than that. Can you advice please?

Hmm, seems it can't find the OS to boot (start up) from.
Possible yr hard drive got disconnected some way? That would cause this...

Otherwise:
If you have a boot-able CD/DVD, try starting with that (hold the 'C' key down while starting up, which tells it to boot from the CD/DVD drive).

If that boots OK, you may need to reinstall the Mac OS, (which, vs Windows, will not destroy the world as you know it on yr Mac)

Helpful?

I put a cd in my mac and it doesnt read it then it automatically ejects it

This would normally happen if you to put a DVD into CD-ROM drive, however, all MacBooks have a DVD drive so it can't be that.
Does it happen with any other CDs or is it just this one? Does the CD play in any any drive?
I had a music CD that would work in my Mac once but it was an oddilty that one of the record companies was trying to promote. It would work on a PC and in a normal CD player but not in a Mac,

Trying to fix a grey screen problem on a macbook. I tried to reinstall the cd and it stuck with errors report. Now it won't reinstall or boot from the cd. When I check the disc utility it says, capacity...

Since no MacBook was ever made with an 8GB hard drive, I have to assume you are reading the capacity of the DVD, which isn't an interesting statistic.
There is no reason your MacBook should not boot from the DVD. Even if the internal drive was physically absent it should still boot from the DVD.
If it is not booting from the DVD, then either your DVD is bad, your optical drive is bad, or you have logic board issues.

CD/DVD optical drive malfunctioning. Invariable performance with reading and ripping CDs. Cannot read DVDs.

upgrade your CD/DVD firmware from MAC website and install it.
if it does same even upgrading driver then most could be problem in optical lens so better taking back in the same place where you bought it from if its still under warranty.

or if its out of warranty then you need to take to Tech so they can fix it for you.

please post back if anything changes and rate all answers.
