Changing the SSID of your wireless network can be done through the web interface of your router or access point. You can access the web interface by going to http://x.x.x.x where "x.x.x.x" is the IP address of your router. Most likely that IP address is This address depends on the brand and model of device you are using, and whether or not it was changed from the default. Once you visit that address is any web browser, it will ask for a username/password (which again I can't tell you without knowing the brand/model). Once that is entered you will be presented with an area to change the SSID.

Once the router has been reset, it must be reconfigured. Using your web browser go to URL address You will then be prompted to login to your router. A log-in screen asking for the password will automatically appear. At this time enter the default password “admin”, in lower case letters into the password field. The username field may be left blank at this time. (Note: both the default username and default password are set to “admin” on some of the newer Linksys router models).

What is network ssid

SSID is the name of the wireless network. Many of the default names are Linksys, Belkin, D-Link etc. You can change the name to pretty much anything you want in the router settings.

How do i change my router name

First you have to access the router through web browser (Internet Explorer) by typing the IP address of your router in the address bar, which is usually (also written at the back of the router)
Then, press Enter. A login screen will appear. Leave the User name field blank. The
first time you open the Web-based utility, use the default password admin. (You can set a new password from the Administration tab's Management screen.) Click OK to continue
and lookup for the options to do the following (under Basic Setup): -
1. Change the SSID (Name) of the router
2. Change the default administrative user name and password (unless you've configured otherwise, the default username is admin and the password admin or password.)
The SSID is the network name shared among all points in a wireless network. The SSID must be identical for all devices in the wireless network. It is case-sensitive and must not exceed 32 characters (use any of the characters on the keyboard). Make sure this setting is the same for all points in your wireless network. For added security, you should change the default SSID (linksys) to a unique name. Below is the snapshot of the required option
(The above step would prevent unauthorized access to your router)
You may wish to refer to the Linksys WRT160N User Guide
(Page 7 Login details, Page 13 Router Name)

Hope it helps! Good Luck! Thanks for using Fixya!

the ssid is the name of the router that you are trying to connect to. the name can also be changed to whatever the end what the name to be as well in the router. so if your linksys router uses the default name then the ssid would be "linksys" or "link".

I can not figure how to change the name of my wireless connection how do i do so?

Hi, this is simple the name of the wifi connection is the SSID, you need to login to your router via a web browser, entering default, (Assuming it hasn't been changed, if so you need to press reset button at rear of unit to restore default,) login and password, and when you are IN the router, you go to the SSID section and make it anything you want, it doesn't matter.
Please go to this link below and download your user manual, it will show you how to login to the router, using default passwords, it also will show you how to change the SSID, (Or name of the WiFi Connection)

Change the display network name

I am not quite clear if you want to change the Network Name or the broadcasted SSID (the information a wireless client can see).
I would change both, so a client or someone who wants to connect to your network can't see right away that you have a Belkin router.

First log into your router's web interface., password "admin", username "admin" (als default) or follow the instructions on the screen, if you have never logged in before.

To change the network name, click on "LAN Settings" in the left pane.
Under "Local Domain Name", you can specify a personal name for your network. (I would always change the default "Belkin" so something else.)

To change the SSID, click "Chanel and SSID" also on the left pane a little bit further down. Here you can make changes to the wireless network name (SSID), operating channel, and encryption security settings.

Don't forget to save any changes you made!

If you need a manual, you can find that here.

If you have any more questions, just come back here and leave a comment - I'm happy to help.

Ssid how do I find my user name and I.D.

it says modem, is this a wireless router? most manufacturers have a default user name and password (like Admin, and blank P/W), you should find on their site. the only time you would need that is if you web in to change settings. If you are looking for a WEP on a SSID network for a home setup, you assign that yourself (usually 13 characters will do) if you changed from the default, there is a reset button on the back of all routers that will reset username and password to mnf default

Using your Internet browser, you can access the Router’s Web-Based
Advanced User Interface. In your browser, type “” (do
not type in anything else such as “http://” or “www”) then press the
“Enter” key.
You will see the Router’s home page in your browser window.
Clicking on the header of the “Wireless” tab will take you to the
“Wireless” header page. From this page, the Router’s wireless radio
can be enabled or disabled (the default setting is enabled). Under the
“Wireless” tab, there are links that allow you to make changes to the
wireless network settings.

Changing the Wireless Network Name (SSID)
To identify your wireless network, a name called the SSID (Service
Set Identifier) is used. The default SSID of the Router is “belkin54g”.
You can change this to anything you want to or you can leave it
unchanged. If there are other wireless networks operating in your
area, you will want to make sure that your SSID is unique (does not match that of another wireless network in the area). To change the SSID, type in the SSID that you want to use in the “SSID” field (1) and click “Apply Changes”
(2). The change is immediate. If you make a change to the SSID, your wireless-equipped computers may also need to be reconfigured to connect to your new network name. Refer to the documentation of your wireless network adapter for information on making this change.

Change name

You would like to change the SSID to something else?

The SSID is the name that is broadcasted, the name that you see when you connect to your network.

  1. Log into the web configuration of your router at http://my.router, or the default address The Enter Network Password login prompt appears.

  2. Type the following text in the user name and password fields: "admin".

In the "Wireless" setup tab:

- Change the default SSID to something meaningful to you, but something that does not give anyone else any hints about your network. For example, using your name or your residence's street address as the SSID is not what you'd call a bright idea.

The SSID is the wireless network name. It is much like the workgroup name in Windows networking. If the SSID of the AP or the wireless router is WLAN (default) each client will search for an access point and associate with it. The default configuration for the F5D6020 PCMCIA card is to connect to an SSID named "ANY". This means the Access Point does not look for a specific SSID. If that is changed to a specific name other than ANY or WLAN, then the card will not connect to WLAN because it is being "told" to connect to a specific Access Point with a specific name.
