My computer will not connect to the internet. I talked to my internet provider. I was told to call the manufacturer of my computer. Technical support said that it was my computer/a sales pitch was to buy a computer was offered. They didn't give my any information of how to resolve non-connection to the internet. This computer is only 4-years old.

Time to time you may need to run a disk defrag on your pc, usually on xp it's double click my computer, right click the c:\ drive, go to properties and select tools, defrag should be in there, now it may take hours to complete but see if that solves. also make sure your disk is not full, good luck!

Click on the start button, then run and type command

you should get a black box (dos prompt)

    type: ping 127.0.0.1

you should get something like this:

Pinging 127.0.0.1 with 32 bytes of data:

    Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
    Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
    Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
    Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128

    Ping statistics for 127.0.0.1:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms

also in the dos box type:

    ipconfig

what does the default gateway show up as?

    Thanks

Recenly my internet has drastically slowed down. i am being told not enough memory. i keep history and cookies deleated.

It is possible one of the memory chips has stopped working. Certainly deleting history and cookies is good practice but internet activity creates a lot more rubbish that clogs things and slows them down. I suggest you download a cleaning program. If you are into paying for good software CCleaner pro is an excellent tool but the free version is what I have been using for several years. It will also tell you how much of your memory is working. You will be surprised just how much rubbish it clears out after only a couple of internet sessions.

I suggest you do a hard drive defrag. It takes time but it is good housework.

If your computer is just as crisp and quick to boot as usual when not doing internet stuff then it is possible your browser has been corrupted by a virus or something nasty. If your whole computer is slow it could have affected more than just the browser. Certainly carry out a full scan and do it with your virus protection and with another programme. I use Spybot, again the free version.

Maybe your hard drive is nearly full and this will cause warnings and slow things down. Try going to My Computer, right click on the icon and select properties to see how much free space you have. You might need to delete some of the programmes you don't use.

When you have completed your computer housework it will be time to try the internet again. Try doing a speed test - maybe the internet really has slowed due to a fault that has nothing to do with your computer. In this case it is your service provider you need to contact.

You could short circuit the process a bit by either taking your computer to a friend's internet connection or inviting a friend to test yours with a known healthy computer.

Solution on a slow Internet connections Problem
The major  causes for a slow Internet connections. A poor-performing connection can be caused by broadband router configuration issues, wireless interference, or any of several other technical issues with your home network. Follow these steps to diagnose slow Internet connections.
 1. Broadband Router Settings
As the centerpiece of a network, a broadband router can be responsible for slow Internet connections if configured improperly. For example, the MTU setting of your router will lead to performance issues if set too high or too low. Ensure your router's settings are all consistent with the manufacturer's and your Internet Service Provider (ISP) recommendations. Carefully record any changes you make to your router's configuration so that you can undo them later if necessary.
 2. Wireless Signal Interference
Wi-Fi and other types of wireless connections may perform poorly due to signal interference, which requires computers to continually resend messages to overcome signal issues. Household appliances and even your neighbors' wireless networks can interfere with your computers. To avoid slow Internet connections due to signal interference, reposition your router for better performance and change your Wi-Fi channel number.
 3. Internet Worms
An Internet worm is a malicious software program that spreads through computer networks. If any of your computers are infected by an Internet worm, they may begin spontaneously generating network traffic without your knowledge, causing your Internet connection to appear slow. Run antivirus software regularly to diagnose and remove these worms from your computers.
 4. Running Background Applications
Some software applications you install on a computer run in the background, quietly consuming network resources. Unlike worms, these are programs designed to do useful work. Peer to peer (P2P) programs in particular can heavily utilize your network and cause connections to appear slow. It's easy to forget these applications are running. Always check computers for any programs running in the background when troubleshooting a slow network.
 5. Faulty Network Equipment
When routers, modems or cables fail, they typically won't support connections. Certain technical glitches in network equipment, however, adversely affect performance even though connections are maintained. To troubleshoot potentially faulty equipment, temporarily re-arrange and re-configure your gear while experimenting with different configurations. Try bypassing the router, swapping cables and changing network adapters to isolate the slow performance to a specific component of the system.
 6. Service Provider Issues
Internet speed ultimately depends on the service provider. Your ISP may change their network's configuration, or suffer technical difficulties, that inadvertently cause your Internet connection to run slow. ISPs may also intentionally install filters or controls on the network that can lower your performance. Don't hesitate to contact your service provider if you suspect they are responsible for a slow Internet connection.

Facebook runs extremely slow on my computer but ok when I acess it on a friends!

Is there the problem only with Facebook or all websites?
There is no much probabilities for Facebook alone running slow on a computer. Maybe you can try upgrading your browser and updating flash files.
If you find all the websites slow, try with the following steps,
1.)Reset the wireless router by using the power switch on it or by unplugging it and plugging it back in.
2.)Place the wireless router in an ideal location. The higher it is, the better, but don't put it near metal objects.
3.)Get as close as possible to the router with whatever device you're trying to connect.
4.)Keep the router and your connecting device away from other electronics. You should especially keep away from phones, fax machines and microwaves. etc.,
5.)Adjust the Wifi antenna if it has one.
6.)Change the router's channel, especially if other wireless routers are nearby.Following these steps would give you stable internet connection and also increased speed in connection. You can check your internet speed from ScanmySpeed.com before and after following these steps.

My computer runs really slow, freezes, internet explorer hardly ever works. help!!

There is no such thing as a windows vista machine. You can install different operating systems on different machines. Your problem is most likely that you're missing drivers for the peripherals.
Download a program called "driver easy" and run it. It will tell you what drivers are missing, once you get all the drivers installed you should find things work better, like once you get your network running then internet explorer will stop having problems.

the problem with wireless routers is that they only will put out little more than 1mbps it may say 54mbps, but it'll usually only download at about 1 mbps, ive found it frustrating myself, but thats all the firmware in those will allow, ive tried to upgrade mine, but still the same, there isnt a fix that i'm aware of, wireless "N" maybe different but i doubt it, sending that much information wirelessly creates alot of heat,

> several games of Spider Solitaire ...

That is *EXTREMELY* slow.

Turn the computer off.
Disconnect the network-cable from your computer.
Turn the computer on -- without a network-connection, does it start-up (to the Windows "wallpaper') any faster?

Uninstall BitTorrent and/or LimeWire and/or any other "file-sharing" software.

Run a "full" virus-scan -- something BAD may be running on your computer.
