Question about Brother HL-2170W Laser Printer
I have a HL-2170W printer with the original cartridge. I was printing something, and it stopped in the middle of the job and the toner light came on. The job does not show evidence that the cartridge is out of toner - it should have about 500 pages left on it - and even after I take the cartridge out, shake it, run the green slide back and forth, etc., it still will not print.
I just bought this printer last week, and printed out less than maybe 100 pages before I got the toner light. i ALMOST spent money on a new cartridge, but luckily i left my wallet at home. i came home, and checked the google, and beheld the solution to my problem in robdew's post. i also put a piece of tape (electrical) over the scanning hole on the right, shook up the cartridge a bit and i'm printing like a charm again.
if you're in my situation, don't listen to CW Oly; you'd be out $60+.

I print about 100 pages a day, and the toner light kept coming on after about 300 pages, even though I was buying brand new
$70.00 cartridges. Finally I looked at the cartridge carefully and put a piece of masking tape over the hole in the cartridge through which the printer shines a light that determines there is not enough toner. Now I get 1200 or more pages per cartridge. Brother assistance was no help at all, but they must have had complaints about this before. You have to keep an eye on the print quality and decide for yourself when the toner cartridge needs replacing! Good luck! I'll never buy another Brother, although the printer is terrific, but the design is flawed.

Replace the cartridge. The starter cartridges have very little toner in them and the machine only estimates how much is left. The printer stopped because it is actually out. Shaking the cartridge does nothing on brother cartridges, they have special internal rollers to ensure even toner distribution. What has likely happened is that the printer's optical toner sensor is tripped, the printer shines a laser through the cartridge, when the beam gets to the other side, the cartridge is empty.

Testimonial: "Seems reasonable. I will give it a try."
Could somebody please guide me as to where this scanning hole is? I'm not as ingenious. Thanks!
