Question about Brother HL-2170W Laser Printer

Toner light won't turn off

I have a HL-2170W printer with the original cartridge. I was printing something, and it stopped in the middle of the job and the toner light came on. The job does not show evidence that the cartridge is out of toner - it should have about 500 pages left on it - and even after I take the cartridge out, shake it, run the green slide back and forth, etc., it still will not print.

I just bought this printer last week, and printed out less than maybe 100 pages before I got the toner light. i ALMOST spent money on a new cartridge, but luckily i left my wallet at home. i came home, and checked the google, and beheld the solution to my problem in robdew's post. i also put a piece of tape (electrical) over the scanning hole on the right, shook up the cartridge a bit and i'm printing like a charm again.
if you're in my situation, don't listen to CW Oly; you'd be out $60+.

I print about 100 pages a day, and the toner light kept coming on after about 300 pages, even though I was buying brand new
$70.00 cartridges. Finally I looked at the cartridge carefully and put a piece of masking tape over the hole in the cartridge through which the printer shines a light that determines there is not enough toner. Now I get 1200 or more pages per cartridge. Brother assistance was no help at all, but they must have had complaints about this before. You have to keep an eye on the print quality and decide for yourself when the toner cartridge needs replacing! Good luck! I'll never buy another Brother, although the printer is terrific, but the design is flawed.

Replace the cartridge. The starter cartridges have very little toner in them and the machine only estimates how much is left. The printer stopped because it is actually out. Shaking the cartridge does nothing on brother cartridges, they have special internal rollers to ensure even toner distribution. What has likely happened is that the printer's optical toner sensor is tripped, the printer shines a laser through the cartridge, when the beam gets to the other side, the cartridge is empty.

Why it prints grey background

Either the toner cartridge is very close to empty or the drum unit needs to be replaced. Check your warning lights. Yellow = toner, red = drum. If no warning lights, pull out the toner/drum unit and remove the toner cartridge. Have a look at the cylinder in the drum (DR2125) - if it is very black and matt looking you will need to have it cleaned or just replace it.

Whats a printer drum

No. The toner cartridge holds the toner while the drum grabs toner that looks like the image you're trying to print and sends it to the fuser for fusing.

My printer was functioning without problem, but the error button came on and the printer stopped printing. I turned the printer off and back on, to no avail.

hello, have you replaced toner cartridge, not just take toner out, and put back in. if the toner cartridge is the one that came with the machine, then replace it. machine should reset.

Pull open the front door pull the drum/toner cartridge out press the green button on the left side of the drum and take the toner out of the drum install the new toner cart. and put back in the machine close the door print steven 818-888-0006

Replacing the toner cartridge

No it isn't, toner does not distribute evenly from the cartridge, when it says it is out you often can shake it and get another few weeks out of it. However, when you get to the point your shaking after every job, stop. I have been told the printer can be damaged by running a cartridge bone dry.

You may have a bad cartridge.
This usually happens when you use generic or refilled cartridges.
Try another cartridge.

The toner light stays on not allowing me to print, but the toner cartridge is new.

Sometimes if a printer runs completely out of toner and the cartridge is replaced it takes a while to get enough toner mixed back into the developer unit so the printer will print again. Some printers have a key sequence to put the printer into a mode that automatically adds toner to the developer but if you don't know the key sequence(Check your operators manual or download a manual from www.brother-usa.com) sometimes this problem can be solved by simply turning the printer off and on until enough toner gets added back into the developer unit.

I replaced my toner on a HL-2170W with a brand new cartridge and after about 20 pages, the toner light came on and nothing prints.

Remove toner cartridge and tip end to end several times. Replace and retry. If still in trouble, take cartridge back to dealer for replacement.
