If there isn't one in back you probably do not have a firewire connection, however there are aftermarket cards that can be inserted into your machine that will allow you to have this port. They are called firewire PCI hubs.

You don't need any special software.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or, despite what said first, you can use any photo cataloging program, such as Windows Photo Gallery or Picasa ( http://picasa.google.com ).

You don't have to use Fuji software.

Need software to download on my computer

You will need a 1394 cable (also called a Firewire cable), and you will need a Firewire/1394 capability in your computer. The cable should have a small 4-pin connector on the end that connects into the camera, and a larger 6-pin connector on the end that goes into the computer, although laptops use the 4-pin connector and therefore you need a 4-pin to 4-pin cable.

You can use Movie Maker (comes with Windows) to capture the video, or you can use Scenalyzer (a shareware program) to capture the video.

How to transfer videos to my pc

I assume you mean videos you've recorded on the MV700i? You need a FireWire card for your PC.
http://www.firewire-1394.com/
But most computer shops will sell them. The camcorder - from memory - comes with a FireWire cable. The "small end" plugs into your camcorder - and the "big end" into your new FireWire PC port.
Then you just need Windows Movie Maker to do the job. You can download to the PC in AVI format if you wish - but for most purposes use "Other settings" -> "Video for local playback (2.1 Mbps)"

On a dcr-hc52 sony handycam, I see DV, DC in and A/V - i'm trying to attach a generic USB cord to download video into camera. Is one of these the right one for USB?

I don't think any of these (DV, DC or A/V) are for the USB. DV denotes Digital Video out- which is typically used by Firewire ports/devices. DC is the DC Power input, and A/V is the Audio Video Out.

Look for a small USB logo around the camera, If you are not familiar with the USB logo looks like, please do a Google-image search, you will get one. This is where the USB will plug in- it will have a 'mini USB' connector at the camera end and a regular USB connector at the computer end. The cable that comes with a Sony camera is grey in colour.

BTW, if you are not sure, please read the manual or consult an expert in person, along with the camera and the accessories that came with it.

If you don;t have the manual, you can look for a PDF of it on the net.

Best of luck.

Hi,

You will need the VL-Z1 CD-ROM Drivers/Software to get your computer to recognize it. The software comes with your camera when you buy it. You can find a replacement by clicking the above link.

Can't upload videos to computer

The JVC cameras have a flip-out screen, behind this is a small port to which the camera cable connects, kind of "M" shaped. It may also have a DV port hidden behind a small plastic door somewhere on the camera. The other end of the cable goes to the back of your computer tower. Turn the camera's power switch to "Play" or VCR mode and then connect the cable to the tower. Windows should detect the camera, load it and then offer to capture the footage using Windows Movie Maker. The video imported is saved to your "Videos" folder by default. Under start, go up to your user name at the upper right -- usually your name-- and inside the window that opens look for Videos.
You can then use Windows Movie Maker to capture and edit your movie.

Video download

Connect it to your computer with a supplied USB or Firewire cable and use the software supplied on CD with the Digital Camcorder. If you have a Firewire cable, but nowhere to put it, you'll need a Firewire card or a Firewire adaptor, which can be bought from most computer retailers.
