DVD/CD-rom not working

Dell inspiron 2600 - in file explorer, the drive registers but when i try to use i get nothing. when i try to update it i get ''supported drive is on connected.''
i've tried accessing the the partition at start-up using F2 (boot menu), F8 give me only option to start in windows and F12 - nothing. i've run regedit and removed a file HKEY_LOCAL_ ...0318} to remove a file ''lowerlimits'' (no upperlimits found). i've uninstalled/restarted/installed to no avail. i've gone through the help and support & troubleshooting off the drive's properties but nothing. i've tried running an update but ''drive is not connected.''
i've taken it out and looked for poor connections but the only connection is one i can't see.
i gave up on solving this in 2003 after dell said it was my problem & it was registering. now i need the drive absolutely. i've spend six days/nights. help in getting this thing fixed would be a God Send.

it is recognized in both. it is working fine in device manager. it obviously won't boot in BIOS. thanks!

  • roscogruene Feb 02, 2010

then why is it recognized but not connected? it is the connection issue that needs to be fixed. i am not positive, but it seems if it was the laser it could be updated and even try to play cd's.

if i could just get it to work for about an hour. what if i totally reinstalled the OS? i've done that since it stopped working and no dice.

Ok well sounds like your drives laser has gone. unfortunatley it seems to be a common thing with dell insiron laptops i have replaced a number of the drives myself. they are quite easy to replace will cost about £40

http://www.allfornotebook.com/product_info.php?language=en&currency=GBP&products_id=2732

It would be cheaper and i sure less frustrating just to get a new drive.. a new laser costs more and trust me you don't wann be fiddling with those.

i hoped this has helped

if the laser has gone is doesn't mean the drive wont be recognised..the hardware is there but just will not read

Even if you don't have driver for CD-DVD ROM with the Operating System, your BIOS must recognize the CD ROM.Set the BIOS to Default setting and check it recognise now.Check if you have disable anything related to CD ROM in your BIOS. Remove your CD Rom and place it again and check.

Drive light comes because of power supply to the CD-ROM.

If nothing works,Download the firmware update

CD-ROM drive doesn't acknowledge DVD-ROM, what's wrong?

CD-ROMs dont play dvd becuase they are not designed to read dvd.

If a dvd drive for your model is not available, you can buy an external usb dvd drive.
That should solve your problem

Another common way around installation is to copy the whole contents of the CD / DVD to a hard drive.

There are a few methods.

My proffered is to make a bootable flash drive on another machine with known working capabilities that will bot into either an XP-pre installation scenario or a Dos based one.

From there it is often possible to start the installation or even copy the required files to a drive on a machine.

Advantage of copying the files is that the CD / DVD would never be needed to add additional component as they are stored on the machine itself.

That also speeds up installation dramatically.

Bios consideration mus be taken into account when booting from flash drives.

Proper external Hard drives are another viable option

CD drive won't read cd's

If you have any windows cd sent by Dell together with your system when you first purchased it, try booting on it by doing this---> Press F12 as soon as you see the Dell Logo, then select onboard/CD Rom or anything that says CD/DVD on the option by pressing enter. If you're being asked, press any key to continue -> Press spacebar immediately. This will load to the window setup. If you have reached the menu option that says:  1. Press Enter to install Windows 2. Press R for Recovery 3. Press F3 to quit

Press Enter to enter the setup. Then if you were able to reach the license agreement asking  you to press F8, that means that your CD rom drive is working as designed. I can assume that the reason why the CD rom drive is not reading any media is because of a possible filter issue on the registry.
Let me know first if the steps I have provided you worked. Good Luck!
