Hello. There are three possible causes for your trouble.
1. The drive belt is broken, or loose, or damaged. The fix is to replace or tighten the drive belt. [See belt replacement in the maintenance section of the manual]
2. The rubber on the friction wheel is worn off. Fix is to replace the rubber [see page 23 in the owner manual]
3. The drive cable is out of adjustment [see the Adjustment section in the manual]
Here is a downloadable copy of the manual in case you don't have one:

It is a Craftsman 9.0hp / 29in - 536.887996 snow thrower - I guess there is no way around replacement of the part ??? Major snow storm coming to the mid-atlantic Fri/Sat and I would not think that a store would have this ??? I have only used it for --- maybe 3 hours / two times since I bought this 4 years ago.......Cheap part ?? or bad design
