Question about Mitsubishi WS-55809 55" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Mitsubishi WS65809 HD input (DTV) not working correctly. I replace the convergence chips in this TV and was making adjustments in the service menu. Everything was lined up and working great. The HD input was working at 1080I perfectly. I was doing a minor convergence adustment in HD mode, and selected 3 on remote to check the 480P settings. When I did that the HD input signal seem to scramble. I now can only get a 480i signal to work. any other signal type and the display becomes almost 100% black and distorted. Any suggestions on how to recover or recalibrate the DTV input? I have done the intialize reset and I no error codes (just 12 which is normal).

    Thanks,
I had tried that and yes the tv reset, but the HD input still doesn't work right. Things I have notice are: on other inputs, the main menu is correct and easy to read. If I put in on the DTV input, the menu has convergence issues and seems slightly shaky.
Currently the tv is at the factory default settings as list in the service manual.

    Other Symptoms:
    Convergence menu:
On NTSC - convergence grid is as expected.
On HD mode - convergence screen bottom, the vertical bars that runs to the bottom actually shifts about half an inch just below the last bottom horizontal line. In general - seems a lot of distortion.

In the 0157 menu, NTSC mode, If I press "3" i can toggle through the 480P, HD, NTSC and RGB mode and parameter settings all stay easy to read. If I do the same in the HD mode, press 3, then when it gets to NTSC mode, the parameters go out of sync and not readable. If I keep cycling through, the parameters are easy to read until i get back to the NTSC input.

I am guessing I have some sort of sync or calibration signal problem. THinking that when I was on HD mode and press 3 to go to 480P mode screwed up some sort of signal calibration. Just guessing though.

So I was wondering if there was a DTV signal input calibration sequence that needed to be done.

Note: If I put DTV input to Auto or at 480I the xbox360 will display properly. If I change to a 1080i or 480P, then the signal looks out of sync, either black screen with colors up at top, or a bunch of moving horizontal lines. Before this happened, the Xbox360 worked perfectly on 1080i. I also checked xbox today on a plasma tv and it worked fine.

regarding your first solution on the reset, if you mean the "initialize" - yes I did that. It did not correct anything.

  • glabadie Feb 03, 2010

    Hi SD,
I been thinking about this. Do you think that maybe one of the convergence chips failed that would cause the HD input problem? I'm thinking its either that or the microprocessor HD input is gone.

    Thoughts?

All these sets do have a hard reset---not the reset button on the front of the set---it will return the set to the factory original condition it was when new in the box--it will not affect the convergence as that is stored in a separate unit--the DCU (digital convergence unit).

It is accessed with an original MITSUBISHI remote.

You can try it if you want:

ACCESS CODE FOR WS65809 IS:

menu-0,1,7,0 enter

There are 3 hidden menus in the set--this is the Option menu

You will see either reset or option etc and highlight it with the remote and hit enter. Set will shut off and should come back on channel three in the air band--any labels you placed on inputs will be gone and set will be in air band--you will if on cable have to change it to cable band and auto program etc.

Let me know what happens and if you have questions I am here to help.

The hard reset should have restored the set---whatever button (3?) you hit caused this and you may now have damaged some part in the microprocessor area----

Based on what you have told me--you may only have two options:

    1. Contact Mitsubishi and see what advice they can give.

    2. With the service manual go into the third "ADJUSTMENTS" menu and look for any thing improperly adjusted--the manual should give you indications of what "normal" is----Do not adjust anything there unless you are certain of it being incorrect.

    3. If no problem in 480 something happened when you were adjusting in 1080.

    Let me know what happens.

The only way one of the new chips is bad would be if the convergence is "messed up"; the set stores the convergence adjustments in that circuit board on the middle board towards the left rear (under the metal shield). This set does REQUIRE convergence to be adjusted in 480 AND 1080 each.

If convergence is good in 480---no way one of the new chips is bad. Can you try to give me a better idea of what the picture looks like in 1080? You know you can up load a photo and post it here?

I will be here online most of the day answering questions if you need me.

It is not a convergence problem.

I see it is only in the 1080---note that white lettering is also "ghosting".

I would bet you changed some setting by accident. It will be in the third menu--the adjustments menu--if you can not find it contact either Mitsubishi with those photos or find a local Mitsubishi expert tech---someone may be able to correct it with adjustment--

I have to say I have never seen this problem in one of these sets but since it happened when you were in one of the service modes it has to be an alignment problem of some sort---problem looks more like a signal processing problem than anything else.

Set will have to be in 1080 mode when someone searches for the possible adjustment to correct it.

Examine with the manual all the possible adjustments in the "circuit adjust mode".

If YOU attempt to adjust there note the numbers indicated (values) for each adjustment so that it does not help you can return it to the setting---do not make matters worse.

It might in that adjust mode be a good idea to scroll through all the things and write every one down and write down the numbers on screen that show the CURRENT setting.

Many will be geometry and will not cause this---I think you are looking for something related to signal etc.

This is one reason I do not lightly give people the access codes for the three menus--it is easy to make a mistake if you adjust something in the wrong menu.

    I hope you find it.

Mitsubishi VS-50803 Big Screen TV - Trying to hook up an HDTV cable box, I was told to hit: menu, 1, 3, 7, 0 - to get to the service menu and switch DTV over to HD and that would solve my no signal...

First please confirm actual model number on rear of set.

Something is not right here, I am looking at Mitsubishi material downloaded in my computer; shows all codes for sets up to 2004. VS-50803 is a VZ6 Chassis made in 1998 and I doubt it is HD set, if it is one of the early ones it will have beneath the HD input vert sync and Horz sync---those required a special box from Mitsubishi etc.

Set has 3 hidden menus:
1. Option menu (for hard reset)= Menu 1,3,7,0 enter
2. Circuit adjust menu= Menu 2,3,5,7 enter
3. Convergence adjust menu= Menu, 2,3,5,9,enter (#4,5,6 on remote then change modes)

Does the DTV input have the two vert, horz jacks as well?

First is the Option menu is really only for a hard reset of the entire set, if you engaged it you may have de-converged the set.

The adjust menu is for height, width etc

The convergence menu is for convergence.

If you did something and did not save it, unplugging set should put it back to before what you did.

In the OPTION MENU WHAT DID YOU SELECT AND DID YOU HIT ENTER WHEN YOU FINISHED?

Hello

Your TV will display all High Definition signals as 1080i True HDTV™ and all standard definition signals will be displayed as 480p.

Component Inputs 1-2
YPbPr(480i/480p/1080i)
These inputs can be used for the connection of A/V equipment with component video outputs, such as a DVD player or external HDTV receiver. Please see Appendix B for signal compatibility.
Input DTV (480i/480p/1080i)
This input is used to connect an external DTV receiver, and can be configured for YPrPb and RGB plus H&V signal types.

As a special feature, you have the ability to adjust the red and blue light beams in reference to the fixed green light beam. This process is called convergence. There are two separate memories for convergence. One, for SD 480i/480p signals; the other for HD 1080i signals. SD convergence should be adjusted while watching an SD source and HD convergence should be adjusted while watching an HD source.

Wide Expand: Enlarges the picture, cropping some of the image on both sides. This Expand format is useful to remove or reduce black side bars on HD broadcasts of 4:3 images with black bars. Available for analog 1080i, digital SD 16:9 and digital HD signals.

InputDTV
This input is compatible with most standard DTV and satellite receivers with component video (YPbPr) outputs. Compatible DTV signals are SDTV 480i/480p, and HDTV 1080i. All other DTV signals, such as 720p, need to be converted by the DTV receiver to one of the compatible signal types. Please check the DTV receiver specifications before connecting.
This input is compatible with some DTV receivers using RGB with "separate H and V sync". Compatible DTV signals are SDTV 480i, 480p, and HDTV 1080i. All other DTV signals, such as 720p, need to be converted by the DTV receiver to one of the compatible signal types. Industry standards for DTV RGB signals (systems, synchronization, timing, and signal strengths) are not currently established. These inputs will not be compatible with all DTV receivers that offer RGB, HV outputs. RGB, HV signals with less than 5 cables are not compatible.
If your DTV receiver offers both DTV component video signals and DTV RGB, HV signals, we suggest you use the DTV component video signals. Check the DTV receiver specifications before connecting.
Ok.

Greenish picture using DTV input

If the set is normal on AV inputs or thru the coax input--but has problem in the DTV(HD) I would suspect whatever is giving it signal(it is component input) is the problem--the component input for DTV could cause this problem--red,green, blue carry not only video but chroma information---if you are using a direct TV box of some kind return it and get another---only other possible cause(Long shot) would be to do a factory reset on thisTV--All
Mitsubishi sets have an option menu which resets the whole set back to condition it was when new in the box--If you want to try this verify model number to me and I will tell you how to do it--Remember: the set is not smart enough to know which input you are using--if you have a problem only on 1 input--it usually is not the set--it usually is what is connected to that input.

If you have questions or need more help contact me by replying to this post.

I do this here for free so if this helps you take a moment and give me a vote here.

Mitsubishi WS-65315 plug in HD comp shows as 480i

Greetings,

In the input assignment menu make sure that the DTV (the only 1080 input on this tv) is set to Y/Pb/Pr and see if that fixes your issue with at least the HD-DVR.

BTW- the HDMI information "1080i HD can only be selected if TV has HDMI inputs". is not correct.

Mitsubishi WS 55711 convergence problem only with some inputs

Projection TV2_bing.gif sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung2_bing.gif, JVC, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Akai, Pioneer, Hitachi, Zenith2_bing.gif, and others. You can get a convergenece repair kit from the link below.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D2_bing.gif
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on - TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash2_bing.gif focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a solution

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.
This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you know what you are doing. If you have never done this before we would advise calling a shop or if you want to do it yourself get a complete kit with instructions and support from www.TvRepairKits.com

Mistubishi Convergence/video display problem

The most likely cause is shorted convergence chips and possibly a few pico fuses.

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. You can get a convergenece repair kit with instructions from the links below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

Problem #1) Convergence

Yours may have one or more of the following symptoms...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2
Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
