Question about Televison & Video
Your unit has 3 crts. Red,Green & Blue. I'm amazed that a unit made in 1991 is still functioning but if the only problem is that it is dark you can probably fix it by turning up the screen drive for each gun. Over time the parameters of the tubes change and they need to be adjusted. This will require some knowledge of the relationship of the dynamics of the system. It will also require doing the adjustment with the set operating and exposure to voltages which are lethal. It would probably be better to let a qualified tech adjust it. The shop you spoke to obviously does not know what they are talking about. Find a shop which has experience with older units and understands the relationship of screen drive, picture adjustment and brightness. This is a simple fix and shouldn't take more than 1 hour by a professional. I would guess less than $100. At the same time have them clean the lenses and mirror and if necessary touch up the convergence. It still should not cost more than $100 from a reputable shop. Let me know how this works out and if you need any more help.

First: I know quite a lot about these sets as I have repaired them for years; I own a 60 inch also made in 1991. As far as the picture being dark that could be caused by the lens on the 3 picture tubes inside the set being dusty if they have not been cleaned for several years---there is also a mirror inside.
You can post a photo of what the picture looks like here if you are willing. The other problem these sets at this age is they used 3 smaller boards that have what are called surface mounted caps that dry out with age--one is for PIP, one for Signal, and one for convergence memory. If one of those is bad--no longer available and very expensive to repair.
Most of these 1991 sets have two rectangular plastic pieces that you remove left to right just under the screen on front; then there is a grill below that has to be removed and a few more screws and the entire screen and frame come off to clean the lens and mirror. Most of these sets you can also get at the lens from the rear if you remove the back cover of the set--clean them with a lens cloth or paper towel with glass cleaner sprayed on the towel.
Let me know if the lens and or mirror have or have not been cleaned for a long while. If possible try to take a photo of what the picture looks like and you can post it here--If you need to know how let me know.
Let me know what questions if any you have--I am here to help.
