You have a groove in one of your upper guides, or you have a bur on your hook assembly. Contact Robert at National Sewing Supply, 888-283-9640 if you would like more detailed information.

Why does top thread keep breaking?

Sounds like your tensions, both upper and lower are out of whack. Easily fixed if so...google a vidyfor your make/model machine on adjusting both upper and lower tensions.

The thread keeps bursting after a few stitches. I've tried adjusting upper & bottom tensions, changing the needle, trying it with different fabrics, but nothing seems to work. What do I do?

Usually when it stitches an inch or two and then breaks, the upper thread is mis-threaded.

Remove the upper thread and rethread from the beginning. ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot when threading the upper thread. Check to make sure the thread path is correct. If it is threaded incorrectly, the thread will frequently break.

Also check that the thread is not hanging up somewhere, sometimes it gets looped around something or it snags on the little slit on the thread spool or a rough spot.

If the upper thread tension is too tight, it will also break the thread. Make sure the tension disk is clean. If there is gunk or a piece of thread stuck in the tension disk, it could be interfering.

If the thread is fraying as it goes through the needle eye, then there is probably an incompatibility of the needle, thread, fabric.

Top thread keeps breaking

Upper thread breaking is usually a sign of incorrect threading or tension too tight, although there are other possible problems:

When threading the upper thread, be sure to ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot so the thread will seat properly in the tension disks. Avoid old thread or bargain bin thread. If the thread is fraying and breaking at or near the needle eye, then try a different type of needle with a larger thread groove that will protect the thread from fraying on rough fabric. Also, check that the thread is not hanging up on something, ie the slit on the side of the spool where the thread tail is stored.

Sews perfect then locks up. I clean thread out then it will sew perfect again

Depends where the excess thread is accumulating.

If through the tension disks, there is something stuck that is interfering with the thread's path to the needle. Be sure to RAISE the presser foot before threading the upper thread and that it is threaded correctly. Can also try installing a brand new needle and changing the brand of thread.

Remove all the thread and rethread from the beginning verifying the thread path is correct. ALWAYS raise the presser foot before threading the upper thread.

Can also try cleaning the upper tension disks. RAISE the presser foot and loosen the tension all the way. Then gently pull a length of unwaxed dental floss down through the tension disks a few times.

If the thread is fraying at the needle, then it is most likely a needle-thread-fabric incompatibility. This link may be helpful:

Another thing to check is if the upper thread is hanging up somewhere. Sometimes it will get wrapped around a thread guide or the spool pin. The machine will sew for an inch or two and then the thread frays or breaks.

If the thread is accumulating in the bobbin area, there is most likely a nick or rough spot that is catching and fraying the thread.

Avoid old, fuzzy, or bargain bin thread.

Why does upper thread break when I try to sew zig zag stitch?

Your tension sounds too tight, try lowering it on the upper thread. Or you may be using a cheap thread which frays easily and frays in the needle. Try using a longer zigzag to see if that works. Is straight stitch smooth?

My thread keeps breaking after I sew just a little bit. I have changed thread, check it is put on correc. Please advise. Not sure if I have the top tension correct.

1. While threading put the foot up.
2. Give gentle tugs along the way. It should be without feeling any hangups.
3. Wherever the hangup is you must correct. Usually at the tension disc.
4 Sometimes the tension disc is tightening more than the indicator says. It should be about four. You can lower this tension setting until the stitch looks good.
5. You may have to take the tension assembly off and clean it thoroughly and sand any rusted spots.

How can I clean the upper thread sensor? My machine continually throws a "Check upper thread" error, even though the upper thread is fine. It seems the sensor is not "Seeing" it.

Try using waxed dental floss to dislodge the snag. Gently pull the floss toward the needle through the thread path. You might have to do it several times. You can use canned air to blow the lint out of the machine. Then make sure you are using a good quality thread. Avoid those cheap spools of thread because they usually are not spun tightly enough to prevent lint build up in the thread path.

Brother 8500D sewing/emb machine - upper thread stops feeding

If the thread is hanging up at the spool - this could be the way it was manufactured, a nick in the spool end or the thread is unwinding too fast, puddling and wrapping around the spool pin.

Keep the bobbin case and surrounding area clean and free of thread tangles and snips. Thread tangles in this area can cause the machine to stop.

When the presser foot is down on any sewing machine, the tension closes and you cannot manually pull the thread through.

Sulky and C & C black tends to fray more than other brands of thread.

If the problem continues, the machine will need to be serviced by a professional.
