Oil System Plugged.

  1. Remove the clutch cover, bar, and chain, clean the bar groove, any holes and passages on the rear of the bar (both sides, consider rotating the bar), if equipped with a sprocket nose ensure it rotates easily at least one complete revolution. Clean the saw oiler hole and channel. Insert a blunted, hooked piece of wire through the oil filler hole and pull the hose in the oil tank out. Pay attention to the screen or filter on the free end (clean or replace, difficult to determine serviceability). Start the saw and see if it oils when revved up. If yes reassemble your saw. If no, continue with 2.
  2. Work your way through the linkage cleaning and replacing any defective parts as you go. Carefully check the hoses for cracks especially at bends and connections. If equipped with an oil pump it is usually behind the clutch (clutch is a left handed thread). Please make extensive notes & some digital pictures will help during reassembly.
If it does not oil on completion of 1 it is most likely a bad oiler or worm gear. Please see the IPL to aid in oiler component identification.

  1. Check the IPL for your saw to see if any special tools are needed. Poulan (Craftsman, Jonsered, Husky) clutch removal tool part number 530031112 if needed, is under $5 from many sources (look at the visible area between the weights if 2 small round sockets are visible you need the tool).
  2. There are metal piston stops available, when square (almost never) with the piston top these work well, if not square they have been known to punch through the piston. I suggest a length of nylon rope (nothing left behind) be used instead of the piston stop (retain 6" ± so you can remove it). Make sure the piston is near the top of the cylinder before feeding the cord or it can fall through the exhaust port and damage the piston as it rises.
  3. Everyone I have ever removed had a left handed thread (tighten it to loosen it). HTH

Saw dust has clogged the passage way in the bar. take the bar and chain off and clean the groove where the chain runs, also near where the bar mounts to the saw there are holes in the groove that intersect with cross holes in the center of the bar, push a paperclip through top and bottom.

THIS WORKED FOR ME....I have a 2014. I've had that problem for quite awhile. I finally decided to try to fix it. I took the bar and chain off, removed all the crud in there. Then I took a small air compressor and blew out the entire area so it was pretty clean. I started the saw at this point and gunned it some. The oil became noticible within a few seconds where it comes out at, above the outer chain bar bolt. Once I found the hole, I then drained the oil tank, and then using the air pump, blew out the hole from the blade area to the tank, leaving the oil cap OFF. Upon refilling the oil tank with a lighter oil (10 wt), I restarted the saw, and the flow was really coming. After the oil; tank empties, I'll start using the regular bar-and-chain oil again, but it's pretty heavy, even though it says it is 30 wt.

Checking your chain oiler


Chain oilers are a vital part of keeping your saw running well. No oil can even cause the chain to bind up. Over a period of time it can greatly increase the wear rate of your bar and chain reducing it's life. Chain oilers seldom go bad they just get clogged up with sawdust.

Remove the housing that covers that bar and sprocket. There are two plates on each side of the bar that set over the studs.They may be identical or slightly different depending on the saw but at least one of them will have a hole in it for the oiler. If you remove the bar and both plates you will see the oiler hole on the saw housing. This oiler injects oil through the plate and into a small hole in the bar where the chain picks it up and carries it around the saw. If this hole becomes plugged with sawdust it will keep your saw from oiling the bar proplerly. This hole should be cleaned out periodically. It's not a bad idea to remove the whole chain periodically and clean the chain guide all the way around the bar and get any sawdust buildup out so the oil can flow better.

No adjustment possible.

But that can be good news when you got good oil as you can run a longer bar and chain up to 20" The shorter the bar the more oil present on the chain and bar during operation

Echo cs 3450 oiler does pump oil to chain bar, leaks along side case


not familiar with that model but check that the oil passage from the pump to the bar is clear and not broken or cracked

CHAIN OILER See Figure 18. ? Use Premium Bar and Chain Lubricant. It is designed for chains and chain oilers and is formulated to perform over a wide temperature range with no dilution required. ? Remove the cap and carefully pour bar and chain lubricant into the chain oiler tank. ? Replace the cap and tighten securely. ? Check and refill the chain oiler tank every hour when using an electric power head or every time the engine is fueled when using a gas power head. NOTE: Do not use dirty, used, or otherwise contaminated lubricants. Damage may occur to the oil pump, bar, or chain.

Normally a 50 to 1 mixture is fine...1 pint 2 cycle oil to 6 gallons of gasoline.
Use "bar and chain" oil on the bar, this is an oil blended for the chain and bar.
If yours has an auto oiler you will put the oil in the bar/chain oil container.
If you do not have an auto oiler,use a hand oiler to lube the chain when needed.

The automatic chain oiler does not get oil to the chain. Yes, it has chain oil. The black tube to the top chamber at the bar, seems to be plugged and I cant get it off to clean it out. Thanks, Steve


I have never seen an automatic chain oiler that worked. Even new ones don't seem to work. Just pour a little used engine oil on the bar once in awhile like everyone else does.
In theory there is a small piston that rubs on an eccentric at the chain sprocket, and that sucks in oil and pushes it through a hole, into the center groove of the bar.
But if the piston is dry, it won't pump.
If the holes are clogged with sawdust, it won't work.

Can't seem to get my oiler to work properly. oil emerges when i run the saw with the bar removed, but chain is dry and hot when run put together.


Some saw manufactures design their oilers to only work with their bars. Are you running the mfg suggested or stock bar? Chain? Stihl Chain is designed to use 30% less oil because of oil groves cut into each drive link directed to the rivets. So if your running an aftermarket bar/chain, the oiling ports may not line up. Especially if it oils with no bar & chain

Brand new poulan pro 4620avx--bar oil is coming out of oiler but not getting onto chain


Hello. Thin your bar oil just a wee bit with some kerosene. If you have a gallon of bar oil add 1/4 cup of kerosene, stir it up and you will be fine. For starters also, directly apply some bar oil to the chain so that you are always using a well lubed chain. Joe

Is your chain oiler working? If you're using saw a lot and the oiler isn't working properly the chain will get hot and bind up especially if the chain is too tight. Tighten the chain so that you can squeeze it in the center of the bar, with your second and third finger on the sides of your fingers (not a very strong grip) and you should be able to almost pull the chain out of the bar guide but not quite. Clean the oiler hole in your bar where the chain oiler injects oil into the bar. You can also run your saw without a bar and chain and see if the oiler is pushing oil out of the injector.
