    Hi, Ginko,
I tried cleaning & clearing ports-ports wouldn't even print except in black. My old printer (which died many yrs ago) never had problems w/ refilled cart..
THIINK I did it right but who knows w/ lexmark. Isn't there a way of lying to the printer & making it think it's a new cart. heh-heh?
    Thanx, Thalia

Lexmark cartridges are not chip protected (chip is there, but does not hold ink counter).

If the cartridge does not work, then it is for one of the following reasons:

  • A communication error with the cartridge
  • A dirty electrical contact (on the cartridge or the ink carriage)
  • A defective cartridge.

Often, refilling operation may damage the cartridge.

You can clean the printer sensor using cotton and cleaning solution or alcohol.

If that does not work, the most common is a damaged cartridge that is not seen by the printer.

Note: If that is not fixing the problem, and you want to ask for refund, please do not leave negative rating.

The rating to expert does not facilitate or affect the practice course, and it is only personally bad for the expert helping you.
I am tired of getting bad feedback after giving professional help, just because the asker is thinking that this will make a refund easier.

Thanks for your understanding.

    Hi Thalia.

The point is that the printer does not know if the cartridge is old or new, because Lexmark cartridge chip does not use counter (like epson for example).

The printer , simply does not recognise the ink because the chip is probably damaged.

The part to clean is not the ports, but the metal plate located inside the ink carriage, the one that makes contact with cartridge.

If that does not work, then the cartridge chip is not working, and for that reason the printer does not detect the cartridge.

Note:If you do not get any error message, but print is blank, then the color print heads and nozzles are probably faulty.

    Not really worrying .

As I said...if that does not work, the feedback does not influence your rights.

I stated that because the cartridge is likely faulty, and you told me you do not want to invert money on this printer or cartridges.

    That is perfectly understandable.

    Good luck.

a refilled cartridge IN NO WAY can lead to printer failure
the ink is the last thing on printer and has no effect to mechanical failures.

Lexmark x5495

Lexmark does not allow refilled cartridge on any of their products.

Lexmark, HP and Canon and-many other vendors use proprietary code to protect themselves against the damage of OEM inks.

All companies will void warranties.

I just refilled black ink of my new printer Lexmark x5495. Does not recognise the black cartilage and keeps on asking for alignment. When it prints alignment page it does not use the refilled black ink....

“Lexmark does not support the refilling of its ink cartridges. Refilling the ink cartridges can cause them to leak, thus clogging or even damaging the print head. Any damage to your printer caused by refilled ink cartridges may not be covered under warranty”. Please use genuine Lexmark cartridges for best results.

When you try refilling your ink cartridges, you are taking chances that something may go wrong. I would search the web and purchase re-manufactured ink cartridges, which would be less expensive than the new ones from Lexmark.

Lexmark advertises the cartridges supplied with this printer as cart. #28 and #29. They claim these are nonrefillable. The refillable cartridges are #28a,29a, 34 and 35, the last two being the high yield carts. Make sure you have one of these.

MFC 640CW not refilling with new ink cart.

Unplug printer from power. Wait a minute. Take all carts out. Plug machine to power. mfc demands carts. Reinsert carts (have a look if they all filled with ink!!). If asked press 2 (No change) despite you use a new cart press 1 Yes cart changed.

Should work!

Lexmark X2550 Cartridge Refilling

I just ordered a Lexmark X5495. The carts that come with it are throw aways (or return them to Lexmark to be remaned.) You can use cart. # 28a, 29a, 34 or 35 to refill, the latter two being the high yield carts. And yes the printer manufacturers are playing a cat and mouse game with us. I normally use Epson because it's easier to circumvent the tricks they employ. I understand Canon is an inexpensive printer to run also. HP and Lexmark are the costliest products to operate. There is a utility for Epson called SSC ver. 4.30 that gets around the safeguards by resetting the cart. chips and a whole lot more. Someone needs to write a utility for HP and Lexmark to replace the standard driver/ink monitors that are designed to siphon off our wallets quicker than they do ink. One more trick I've heard: when the printer is looking for a new cart have a spare cart handy and put it in in the printer. The printer will now think you have ink in the cart.(whether its empty or full) Now trying swapping it out for a refilled cart and see if that works. The point is this: the printer wants to see a new cart serial# ,not the same one that was just being used last.
