Laptop won't BOOT

Laptop locked up while using. Powered OFF and restarted and won't BOOT Windows. Have tried Operating System CD and the Application and Driver Recovery CD. Message: Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: System 32|Drivers\pci.sys. All attempts at recovery fail. HD spins on power up CD drive spins. Checked HD in BIOS and it fails tests 1-7 in quick test. When I expand the HD in BIOS it is identified.

I feel confident that your info is correct. I was waiting to respond until I could replace the HD. That will take a little time as the laptop is in a remote area where it will take a week until I can get the replacement. Thnks

Hi,

This is VIkram Kumar Thumu from India- Hyderabad. I have seen your message at this web site... and I would like to provide my solution on the issue.

Well, the message " 1-07 test failed " by HDD test in BIOS confirms that Hard Disk Drive of your Laptop is gone bad .
Hence to resolve the issue, need to replace a new Hard Disk Drive for your notebook.

I am sure that this will resolve the issue.

If you have any queries or issues you can mail at thumuvikram@rediffmail.com. I'll be glad to answer ...

Thank you.

Bye.

Driver not found reboot your system and run this setup again

Kenlaya, This will be a bit more complex but i hope you will grasp.
That is a sign of a corrupt system file that makes the operating system unstable and fail to boot up.

If you are using Windows 7,

Put the CD in the CD drive and restart your computer. When you are prompted, choose System repair, or start-up repair. This will fix your problem. Note: The Serious the problem, the longer it will take to fix it up.

If your laptop is running Windows XP....

Put the Operating system CD (e.g XP, Win 7 or Vista or anything like that), in the CD drive. Boot your laptop while pressing F2 and this will let you go to the system BIOS for your laptop. In the system BIOS locate the boot order or the boot sequence and configure the CD drive to be the first in the boot order and restart your laptop. This will let the computer boot from the CD.
Wait until the CD finishes loading its files, then you are going to be prompted to press Enter (to continue) or press 'R" to repair using an automated repair.

At this point just press enter and continue, then you will press F8 for license agreement and then you will be prompted again to press Esc if you want to install your Operating system afresh, or to press "R" to repair your OS(Operating system) or press F3 to quit. At this point, you can now press R to repair. Sit back and relax while the CD replaces old with new files in your Windows directory....
When it is done, it will restart and continue in another face where you will be prompted to answer a few question and then your operating system would have been cleansed.

How do I reinstall the Operating System on my computer?
Select models, with Microsoft Windows, have the ability to have the Operating System reinstalled from a hidden partition built into the computer.
Note: During the process, all data stored on your computer will be overwritten. This means all your files, such as email and photos, will be erased. Therefore, we recommend making a backup of all personal data before starting the recovery process.

To start the system recovery:

  1. Restart the computer.
  2. When the Acer logo appears on the screen, press the Alt and F10 keys repeatedly.
  3. If you are prompted with a Microsoft Windows boot screen, press the Enter key.
  4. After the system recovery application has loaded, follow the prompts to reinstall the Operating System.
If the ability to reinstall from the previous method is not available or fails, recovery of the Operating System will need to be from Recovery Media. If you do not have a set of Acer Recovery Media, you may purchase the set online from the Acer Recovery Media Order Form.
Note: If your computer does not have an internal optical disc drive, an external optical disc drive will be required in order to recover the Operating System using Acer Recovery Media.
  1. Restart the computer.
  2. When the Acer logo appears on the screen, press the F12 key repeatedly to enter the computer's Boot Menu.
  3. Press the CD-ROM drive eject button and insert the disc labeled System CD.
  4. Close the CD-ROM tray.
  5. Refer to on screen instructions to select either CDROM or USB CDROM.
  6. The computer will boot from the Acer Recovery Media
  7. When prompted for the Recovery CD, remove the System CD and insert the Recovery CD.
Note: If there are multiple Recovery CDs, please insert the first of the Recovery CDs.
  8. After the system recovery application has loaded, follow the prompts to reinstall the Operating System.
Note: if your computer is unable to run the Acer Recovery process, or errors occur during recovery, please contact Acer support.

Laptop wont even attempt to load windows??

With this kind of problem, you must put in the Windows software disk and boot. Then select repair Windows from the list. This option will attempt to correct the problem.
If you do not have the disc, boot into the repair / diagnostic mode from the boot screen. See if there is an option to create boot disks.

Windows vista will not boot on a toshiba laptop

First try boot options.

On start up press F8, you get different boot options listed.

Select "last known good configuration"
If this doesn't work, try "boot into Safe Mode". Then restart once safe mode loads.

If neither of these work, you may have to attempt a "repair" of windows.

Get a Windows Vista Operating system disk (same version of Vista, Home or Premium).

1. Boot from it (put it in CD drive and restart the laptop).

2. If you still get the same problem start up, you need to set the laptop to boot from CD.

3. Restart laptop, press Delete key or F2, or F12 (it should say one of these on the screen) to enter the Setup. or another key to get "boot options"

4. In Setup (BIOS) Use Right Arrow to find the Boot Options. Use the instructions to move the CD-ROM to first position, above HDD (hard drive). Press Esc, then F10 to save your changes and exit.

5. The Windows Setup CD Rom should now run. It should come to a screen where you are asked to press R to repair windows.

6. When it comes to the command prompt, restart the laptop

Hopefully the laptop should boot OK again.
