Question about Apple Power Mac G5 Desktop

Blinking question mark on bootup

I've got a G4 Quicksilver machine 466Mhz that I just had repaired, or so I thought. The power supply was replaced and at the store; after examination, the tech guy was pretty sure that that was the problem.
I managed to locate a used power supply on the 'net and it was installed. I was assured the machine booted OK in OSX and OS9. But when I brought it back to school (where I work) it booted once and that's it. The repair place went out of business but that still leaves me with the eternal question mark. I have tried booting in safe mode (to run file system check), but it does not find a device.

I do have the OS DVD but I can't open the superdrive. What's the trick to get it to open?

I have two similar Macs in my classroom attached to a printer; Our school is Mac-phobic so I enjoy given the kids an opportunity to use my Macs.

And now, I just found out, the machine won't even turn on. Is it dead or worth trying to fix?

Thanks.

Did you try holding the "C" Key continuously while re-booting?

I have a powermac G4. When I turn it on it chimes but there is no display and a red light on the motherboard. Checked the power supply - all voltages are good. Bad motherboard or video card?

There is one red LED on the Power Mac G4 QuickSilver logic board. It indicates that there is power to the board and does not imply a fault condition.

Do you hear mechanical activity from the drive? It is possible the machine is running fine except for the display or graphics card. Try another display. If you have another Mac, you can also try starting the machine in target disk mode by holding down the T key at boot (your machine was built in 2001, so it should have this feature) and see if you can access the internal drive from another machine. This should eliminate the motherboard as the culprit.

I have a quick silver g4. I connect this to the outlet on the wall and it did not turn on. it has the power light goes on and off and it sound like a disco light. tic tic as it turns on and off

This report matches no common failure mode of the Quicksilver.
With power cord disconnected, test the internal battery voltage. If it is below 3.3V, it needs replacement. After replacing, you MUST reset the PMU by pushing the PMU button (located near the battery) ONCE. Then retry the startup.
If this does not solve your problem, you will need to bring your unit to an Apple-qualified tech for diagnosis.

I have a quicksilver power mac G4 desktop that has a blinking green light when I turn it on. What should I do?

I assume the light you refer to is the power LED.
No Apple tech repair guide says anything about this LED being able to blink.
It's possible that this is an indication that it is trying to upgrade firmware, especially if it is accompanied by a loud audio tone of about three seconds. I can't say this for sure, because it has never been necessary to activate the firmware upgrade mode on a Quicksilver, since Apple never released any firmware upgrades to it. Firmware upgrade activation is achieved by holding in the power button at startup until the tone is heard. If you are hearing the tone and the power LED is blinking, it may simply indicate that your power button is sticking in.

Powermac g4 shut down

OK it's a G4 iMac.
Burning smells coming from macs often indicate a failure in the power supply module. That said, the G4 iMac (in my experience) has been the most reliable iMac ever and power module failures are very rare.
Your best option is to find a Mac repair centre near you and take in in for a quote. But be warned - it will cost. For some reason known only to Apple power supply modules are expensive (but not as expensive as the equivalent volume of HP ink) and replacing them is not as easy as on many of the other computers.
If it is the power supply, you will not be able to switch it on again. Your data on the HD should be safe (unless the smell was coming from that - - I've had it happen!). So when you get to the workshop and you've had your quote, if you decide not to go ahead with the repair, ask the workshop to remove your HD and put it into an external case so that you can plug it in to another Mac and continue using it.
Let us know what the outcome is.

My Power mac G4 Quicksilver has problems. When i boot it up the chime comes on, and i see the boot up screen. Although in the middle of the screen there is a folder that is blinking a ? mark sign. I tried...

The folder with the blinking question mark means that your Mac cannot find a bootable system on the internal drive. This usually means either that the drive has been corrupted or is not accessible. The proper repair procedure is to boot from the system installation CD and use the Utility menu to run Disk Utility / Repair Disk on the internal drive. But at this point, I'd have to ask you to elaborate on your claim that you "messed up your Super Drive" before I can figure out how to proceed from where you are.

The power button is only working periodically

Hello,
On these PowerMac G4 desktops, the powerbutton works when you press hard and long on it.
If this continue even doing so, I would recommend to take the Mac for repair.

Powermac g4 will not turn

this is a common problem with G4 Quicksilver. Your power-supply is defect and has to be replaced. I have 4 G4s in my lab with the same symptom: a short flash of the power-button light, sometimes it turns on, but mostly the machine is dead.
