you are right about the filters. It turned out that the projector was slightly damaged and there was a filter trigger that was not being pushed in and was not allowing my projector to turn on. Had to have that disconnected by a professional so that the projector would work.

- Unplug the projector for a full 4-5 minutes.
- Plug it back in and wait for the ready light and try it again.
If the above fails, replace the lamp.
If that also fails, it is likely a bad ballast.

SOURCE: I have a NEC VT470
steady orange means projector in standby mode
red light 6 times is a lamp error.
either the lamp is old and wont start up or the ballast power pcb is not working.
can you hear the sparking of the high voltage trying to strike the lamp.
if you can then the lamp may be dodgy.
can you borrow one to test it out

SOURCE: NEC MT1065 Lamp exploded as
The orange power indicator means it is idle or in standby mode.
If the status led blinks rapidly it means that an error has occurred. Please check the lamp cover and see if it is attached properly. I was a bit surprised though as you said that the lamp exploded? literally? This shouldn't happen if the control board is working properly. This unit has an auto shutdown feature if the lamp overheats and should not let you turn it on if lamp reaches its usable life. Lamp LED blinks red rapidly)
Check if the lamp is properly installed and if the lamp cover is attached properly. Once confirmed, press the power button and see if it will kick the system out of idle/standby mode.
If this won't work then we might be facing a bigger problem which requires the projector to be serviced by a qualified technician.
Hope this helps.
