Question about Kitchen Ranges

2 Answers

When the oven is off, a single 'beep' is heard, then the oven light comes on. The OVEN LIGHT button can be depressed & the light goes off. If left alone though, this cycle continues about every minute or so: BEEP, light comes on, then light goes off by itself; & continues. But, ALL the touch control panel buttons do not function, except for the START & CLEAR/OFF buttons only beep when depressed. The digital clock keeps time, but also cannot be adjusted. WHAT'S WRONG ? This unit has only been in home service for about 5 years since new, but was purchased earlier for our new home.

Obviously, some info was not included to you when I first sent this message to Fixya.

    It's a GE single convection oven model JT910, ser # HZ6 94401Q. (about a 1999 model)

There was never any smell or error message displayed.

During the malfunctioning, & in between, I was able to catch a couple times when it would accept touchpad controls. The first time I set it to bake, 200 degrees, & start. It went from 100 to 153, then shut off by itself & went blank. The START & CLEAR/OFF buttons were again the only two to beep when depressed. Then it continued to do it's cycle of oven light coming on & going off by itself, like before.

5-10 minutes later I was able to 'gain control' of the touchpad again & it allowed me to hit BAKE, I entered 300 degrees & it got to 300 & worked normal. I left it there for about 5 minutes, then hit the OFF & it turned off.

Since thay one day of malfunctioning, it's been working fine. What's going on ???

Could something have been trigured by the oven heat to get it to work normal again?

    * * * And what would originally have caused the first problem of the oven light coming on by itself & doing it's cycling of coming on & going off by itself several times?

I don't think so, but because the plastic control digital panel is right above the oven door opening; is there ever a problem with that panel getting too much oven heat? Because since we live in cold country, usually after using the oven in the past, we always prop the door open after the oven is turned off, to gain the residual oven heat into the kitchen. NO WARNING or guideline is printed in the owners manual, of NOT doing that.

    PLEASE ADVISE ,,,,,,,Thanks

Sounds like a bad ERC (Electronic Range Control) or a bad touch pad assembly if you have an oven with a seperate touch pad. Fairly expensive to repair, and may be a result of a power surge in your area. Let me know the Make and Model of the oven and I can check for diagnostic codes on this, and whether you have a seperate touch panel. Thanks, Appliance Specialists

Yes I see that you have already gone into some detail. We don't always see any other comment except for your first post. It sounds like your ERC had a computer glitch or your touch pad was sticking on one or more pads. Whenever we have wierd contol problems, we recommend that you first turn off the power to the unit, for about 30 minutes. This will reset the microcomputer/ERC board and can fix your problem quite a bit of the time. As to what I think your other comments were referring to, as we cannot see whatever the other technician was telling you. Heat from the oven, especially heat from the high temp self-cleaning cycle, does leak up into these controls and will damage them. Leaving the door open for the heating benefit is very bad for these microcomputer boards and touch pads. A good share of the oven conrol repairs that I do, are right after someone has just self-cleaned their oven. I recommend that you limit how often you self-clean to as little as possible, and that you reduce the oven cleaning time to 2 hours if it will allow you too. And you are right. The manufacturer should have a warning against leaving the door open to cool the oven down, or to use the residual heat for the house.

One more thing, I looked up your model number, (you need to get the complete model off of the metal tag on the oven itself). It was missing 5 to 6 more numbers, but it did pull up about 10 models that were all very similar, single covection wall ovens. All of these had seperate ERC's and touch pad panels. If this fails again, reset the controls by powering off for 30 minutes, and if it still doesn't work, you may need to call a technician to determine whether it is the ERC, the touch panel, or both in some cases. Fairly expensive repairs. Good Luck again, Appliance Specialists

Oh, you probably got this fixed already. If it happens again, it helps to take the control panel off, insert paper towel folded up neatly and slotted into the ribbon (it absorbs the moisture which causes the ribbon to short out). Sounds crazy but it's true! I saved our family hundreds of dollars with a piece of paper towel!

Oven comes on for 5 min then shuts down everything even the keyboard

Same problem here on JKP15WOW1WW. The cycle starts like this:
1) Open circuit Breaker
2) Open oven panel and push ribbon connector to ERC. Replace planel.
3) Close circuit breaker
4) Run to oven, notice clock flashing some time but not 12:00 and start Bake. Bake button beeps and starts bake coil.
5) Within 5 minutes hear a beep and all buttons on panel are unresponsive. Bake continues. if oven light is on it continues to glow. Only button that responds with a beep (and not to clear bake or oven light) is Clear botton.
