Question about Samsung RB2155 Bottom Freezer Refrigerator

2 Answers

Samsung RB2055SW 6 years old (out of warranty) ice build up in the back of fridge. Freezer fine, but fridge stable around 48 - 50 F. Defrosted for 48 hours. cleared out water and dust from behind access panel. checked drain tubes which were clean. turned on for 3 hours and freezer is fine. Fridge is now at 58 degrees. The fridge used to make occasional clunking sounds, but doesn't anymore. (never thought I'd miss that but I do). It does have some gurgling sounds up above. Fan by the access panel is running. Sound like another fan is running somewhere higher up.

Update: After 24 hours the fridge settled back at 38 degrees. Then a few days later, it seems like the ice has been creeping back in..

Does that change the previous suggestion at all, or would it be the same?

    Thanks for your advice.

The evaporator coil behind the cover on the back wall inside the freezer will ice up under normal conditions. Every 8 to 10 hours for around 20 minutes the defrost timer (or in most newer models the electronic adaptive defrost control) will turn the defrost heater on to melt the built up ice. There is a defrost thermostat which prevents the heater from overheating the freezer by breaking the heater circuit when the temp reaches close to 32 degrees F. The entire cooling system shuts off during the defrost cycle and starts back when the timer advances through the cycle.

If this ice is not melted it will continue to build up until the air can’t flow over the coil to circulate the cold air through the freezer and into the fridge. The temperature change in the fridge is usually noticed first followed by the freezer.

If the defrost thermostat is bad, it can prevent the heater from coming on OR it won’t turn the heater off when it gets too warm. It is clamped to the evaporator coil at the top to sense the temp. If it appears to be misshapen it is bad.
With an ohm meter it should show continuity when cold and none when warm.
You can also bypass(disconnect the two wires plugged into it and twist them together) the thermostat to see if the heater comes on then. If it does then you know the thermostat is bad and needs replaced.

The defrost heater is located on the evaporator. It is in a tube which is at the bottom and can also go up the sides of the evaporator. On some types you can see a burnt spot if it’s bad. With an ohm meter it should show continuity from end to end when disconnected from the wiring in the freezer. You can also test the wiring for voltage when it’s in the defrost mode.

If you have a defrost timer you can test it. It can be located under the fridge behind the kick panel on the front. Some are in the fridge with the controls at the top. You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer because that means the timer is not running. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.

If you have an adaptive defrost control instead of a timer, replace it if the heater and thermostat test good. It is located in the fridge with the controls in some models and on the back in others. You can post your model number into one of several appliance parts sites on the internet and search for defrost components to find your parts.

If it is a defrost problem you have and the heater and defrost thermostat both are good then yes the board is the only component left that could be bad.

Check the damper door between the refrigerator compartment to the freezer compartment, make sure its opening and closing as you adjust the temp in the refrigerator compartment,if its iced up again it could be a door seal bad letting in warm outside air which will condense and cause moisture, also check the defrost control and defrost heating element for proper operation

Can a Miele Fridge Freezer, warm in both sections, fan working - be repaired

All too often it IS the fan, but not always the way you think. the impeller on the fan is simple plastic an clips on the motor shaft. and can come off very easily. Since there are not two compressors in many refrigerator/freezer combos due to both production and operation costs, the refrigerator "borrows" some of the cold from the freezer so the fan on the freezer side not operating properly will allow the coils to ice up internally, on those that only have the fan on the refrigerator side this is multiplied by the galley way icing up, blocking the cold air from reaching the refrigerator side

Try rearranging all items inside fridge and freezer so that air may circulate around all items easily and then check seals on doors and ensure doors are closed completely and not leaking cold air. Also do a complete thaw/ defrost. You can remove the plastic coverings and ensure all ice is defrosted. Using a hair dryer will speed up thawing/defrosting process.

If the defrost heating element, defrost timer or evaporater fan weren't working, you'd develop a block of ice on the evaporator. Is the compressor running? If it is, it might have bad valves from the frost buildup scenario. Liquid refrigerant could have gotten to the suction valves. The sealed system should have a five year warranty. Might be time to call a pro

Whirpool bottom mount fridge not defrosting 2 years old

Inside back cover of fridge should be a schematic. If this not computer controlled, there is a defrost timer in there somewhere. It will have 120 V AC coming to it, on to the heating element then back to 120 VAC return. If fridge has a ice maker, it also controls the water valve, filling the tray. Frequently the defrost timer fails, could also be wiring or the heater, but this is unlikely

in the freezer section there is a 6 screws. unscrew them and remove the back panel. there will be 2 wires attached to the panels, remember where they go. you will see a metal evaporator which will be filled with ice. this is the problem. use a hairdryer to melt the ice. this is essential as you mustn't puncture the wall of the fridge with any sharp item. before replacing the panel ensure that everything is dry or ice will reform, and also ensure that the fan blades are turning properly or cold air will not be blown into the fridge.

SAMSUNG RS253BAWW NOT WORKING

the ice maker wont cycle untill the temp of the ice is around 10 degrees so if the freezer is at 15 or 20 due to some other malfunction then you will see the maker full of ice but it wont harvest and make another batch. so you could have a sensor bad, control malfunction, refrigeration issue, compressor, defrost system malfunction(you mentioned ice build up)
