Question about Microwave Ovens

Open Question

We are pushing start and the light comes on and the microwave acts like it wants to start, but it just doesn't. Since the light comes on, we know it is not a fuse or power issue, right? Any help would be greatly appreciated. The model number is JMC8127DD/JMC8130DD and it is an over the range microwave. Thank you very much for your time, Kari Johnson 720-304-8060 robrjohnson@msn.com

Would this be a fuse, though, if the light is indeed coming on. There is some power then, right? When you push start, the light comes on and the next step would be for the roundtable to start moving, but it doesn't.

    Thanks,
    Kari

Great! Thanks so much for the turntable advice. I am assuming I just unscrew the plastic piece in the middle of the bottom of the microwave where the plate fits in, right? And this will be where I will find the turn unit, correct?

A bad keypad may be worn out due to age, damaged, or it may have gotten wet or otherwise contaminated. Moisture and contamination can be caused by not using the hood fan when boiling on the stove top, spraying of cleaners, by storing the microwave in an unheated garage or shed, or infestation. I warn my customers to never spray cleaner directly onto the microwave keypad, since the liquid can get inside and "lock up" or even ruin the keypad or controller. Apply an alcohol-based cleaner (such as the purple kind) to a cloth (since paper towels can scratch) and gently wipe it off. I suggest to my customers that they NEVER use any ammonia-based cleaner (like the blue stuff) on a microwave, since the ammonia will crack and distort polycarbonate plastics. A microwave can be dead for many reasons.

If it goes dead for a while during or after cooking then comes back on, the magnetron is probably overheating and causing the magnetron thermostat to open. Then when it cools, it closes the circuit and allows power through again.

If it's intermittent or random, it may be a bad connection, usually on the control board or a loose fuse holder.

If it went dead almost immediately after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a shorted high-voltage capacitor.

If it went dead a few seconds after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a failing high-voltage transformer.

If it goes dead or blows the breaker when you plug it in or open or close the door, then there's a problem with a door switch or door switch mount.

If the fuse is good, it may be an open thermostat or thermal cutout on or near the magnetron or on top of the cavity / body of the oven.

A microwave can be dead for many reasons.

If the fuse is good, it may be an open thermostat or thermal cutout (TCO) / thermal fuse on or near the magnetron or on top of the cavity / body of the oven.

If it goes dead for a while during or after cooking then comes back on, the magnetron is probably overheating and causing the magnetron thermostat to open.

Then when it cools, it closes the circuit and allows power through again.

When checking thermostats, if it has a hood fan thermostat, that should read open, as opposed to the others, which should read closed.

If it's intermittent or random, it may be a bad connection, usually on the control board or a loose fuse holder, or even an intermittent fuse.

You should do a continuity test on the fuse while it's in the holder (with the microwave unplugged, of course) then turn the fuse by hand or take it out and put it back in, then test it again.

If you remove the fuse, then press the meter leads against the ends, it can allow internal contact to be made and make a bad fuse appear to be good.

NOTE: There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting.

SOURCE: KENMORE MICROWAVE (HOUSEHOLD) LOCKED

It sounds like you press STOP two or three times to lock it. Maybe that (or another key) will unlock it.

The lock / unlock procedure will be covered in your owner's manual.

Or you can try a hard reset - unplug it from the wall for one minute, then plug it back in and try again.

If you don't have your manual, you can get one here. (Enter your model number without any spaces)

When I push a button to start the mircowave, the timer counts down but the microwave doesn't come on.

It sounds like part of the electronics driving the magnetron (yes its a real word) have failed. So you could take it back, or get it repaired, or replace it. The repair costs would be similar to buying a new one, so I would buy a new or used one, but buy a japanese brand like panasonic instead. My Panasonic micro is 17 years old and still working.

Microwave lights up doesn't turn on

The part of the oven called the "magnetron" (this part is what creates/generates the microwave energy that heats the food or liquid) is burned out, the cost to repair is more this part is more than the cost to replace with the cost of Microwaves so depressed by the stagnant economy.

There really shouldn't be a correlation between the metal ring in the oven cavity and the erratic operation of the control board. Although it might seem suspicious, what happens inside the oven cavity stays in the oven cavity.
