Question about PfaFF Sewing Machines

1 Answer

Threading I have just gotten my first serger; a Pfaff Hobbylock 774 Serger. I cannot get it threaded correctly. It either wont overcast or it jams up and I have to cut the threads to keep from causing any damage. The directions in the manual are a vague. I've attempted to follow the the directions on the inside of the machine as well and still no go. My problem may be at the very top were the thread comes down off the telescopic stand bar to the plastic piece above the thread regulators. Do you have any simple ideas. Thanks in advance, Mary

Mary - I sympathise with you regarding the "vague manual directions". I have a Pfaff 4862 and if I hadn't found the video, I would never have managed to get it working. There are animated videos at the Pfaff website, just not sure if they would still have them up for the older models - but worth a try, surely.

I need a video on how to thread a pfaff hobbylock 4842 serger

Pfaff has a video on threading the Hobbylock 4842 here: http://www.pfaff.com/mediafiles/threading_guide/index_en.html . You need Adobe Flash Player available on your browser. Enter the tutorial, the link is below the Quick Help paragraph. Then choose the correct machine (from the links across the top). Then use the drop-down menu to choose the stitch that you will be sewing for the appropriate threading video. Then click on the appropriate thread (below the video window) to see how to thread that section of the serger. (For two-thread stitches, you will see two options are greyed out.)

I hope this helps.

Pfaff hobbylock 4842 serger - how to thread

here is a manual:

PFAFF hobbylock 4842 Instruction Manual

Be sure to ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot when threading the machine. Also, thread each thread in the ORDER specified or your machine will most likely never stitch correctly (usually, the upper looper first, lower looper next, and then the needles).

Price of a hobbylock 4842

Difficult to say. Supposedly original new price was ~$700

However, if it is a used machine, so much is subjective based on physical and operating condition, the accessories included, desirability of the model, where it is located, etc.

I need a manual for a Pfaff Hobbylock Serger 4762, where can I find one

I can't find a manual for this model, however there is a general hobbylock book http://sewingonline.co.uk/library/know-your-pfaff-hobbylock.html which would certainly be a good start.

You may find best source is to contact Pfaff locally and source it from them direct.

You could also try www.diplodocs.com, I can't see this manual but if you go through similar model numbers manuals you may see one very similar. Overlockers/Sergers are very similar in many ways so once you've mastered one, the next one is pretty straight forward. Four tension knobs, 2 needles and 2 loopers is the norm - to get a three thread stitch you just don't thread one of the needles. Tension adjustments alter the stitch formation, and you should have a stitch length knob on the right side of the machine along with a flywheel and if it has it, differential feed (which controls the feed dogs so you can stretch, or compress the fabric as it goes under the foot).

There are some good general how to use a serger books in the marketplace too which should help. Threading up, many machines have a diagram inside the front flap, colour coded dots on the knobs, eyelets and loopers. And oiling points are often marked on this diagram too. But basically oil the two loopers where they slide/move on another metal part. Some good info here too http://sewing.about.com/od/sergersoverlock/Sergers_Overlock_Sewing_Machines.htm

Hope this assists you a little.

Hobbylock 797 how to thread

The hobbylocks all thread in much the same fashion.  There is a diagram for a four thread hobbylock on this website.  It would be better if you found a Pfaff dealer to show you as it is quite complicated.

Once you have it threaded, always cut the old threads at the spool and knot new ones on and pull through.  You will have to thread the needles as the knots will not pass through but it does save an awful lot of frustration when needing new colours on the spools.
