Read a bit on why clothes might be coming out of the wash with small tears, suggested to check interior of washing machine for nicked or chipped enamel. Sure enough, there was a dime-sized chip that is rough to the touch, and the explanation is that clothes may get torn against the rough place during spin cycle. This happens especially on the edges of the many drain holes lining the drum as a machine becomes worn, the edges of the holes may get jagged. Check your washing drum routinely! Anyway, the suggested fix was 2 part: 1) use a silicone sealant to patch any chipped or rough enamel spots. Allow it to fully cure, dry according to product instructions.
2) cover the fix with enamel paint and dry completely. Check to ensure no rough area remains
