Question about Maxtor Hard Drive

Maxtor 1TB external HDD says files are corrupt

I keep getting an error message saying that one of my files is corrupt every time I try to save a file to or delete one from my external hard drive (it's a Maxtor OneTouch 4 1TB, though the option is not listed as one for below). I have tried running both the SeaTools for Windows 7 program that was recommended on this site by one of the gurus, as well as run check disk and the error-check from Windows. The SeaTools said it passed the long generic scan while the error-check had said that all of the bad sectors and files had been fixed or moved to a folder on the drive that I cannot find. I also tried to split my largest folder in half since someone suggested that it could have just been above a certain capacity. When I first ran check disk, though, there were a ton of keys that it had to delete and a fair portion that was orphaned that had to be reallocated. This was after I deleted a folder from on online game I was playing for a while that was unnecessary as I also had the install file still on as backup. What should I do next

1. Download this tool:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4040651/LLFTOOL.EXE

2. Format

(WARNING: After running this low level format tool,
the whole USB flash disk surface will be fully erased.
Therefore, data restoration will be impossible after using this utility!)

The best you can try is to remove the external HDD and see if computer boots..

If it does, you know where the problem is..

If it doenst, reboot computer, start tapping F8, if you get advance boot options, try to boot computer with Save Mode, Perform system restore from save mode.

If the above doesnt work, you need to perform repair installtion of Windows XP.

I can not copy or remove files tot mine extern harddisk Maxtor and the error shows 0x80070571. What can i do? How to repair I have already done cksdsk but is does not help

Hello,

There are several things that come up for this error message.

1. The files you are trying to copy over to your external maybe corrupt. (What type of files are you trying to copy, windows files or just personal data ?)

2. Your External HDD is either damaged, or not hooked up correctly. Make sure all cables etc are secure and working, try a different set of cables if possible.

3. You can try this tool that will analyze your hard drive for problems. CLICK HERE.

I purchased a maxtor drive ~3yrs ago when I got a new laptop from my company. I successfully saved c:drive components to the new drive. I am now about to get another new laptop and am trying to copy...

Well, you could create a folder on your c:drive (call it something meaningful) and save all your current stuff to this folder.
Ideally you want all your original saved stuff in one folder, and all your new saved stuff in a different folder on the drive, that way you can manage and navigate around your saved data and understand clearly where it is and where it's from.
Hope this helps!

Can't turn off Hard Drive

The error means that you are using a file on the external hard drive and that it can not close that file when it is use. You have to close the program that is using the file first.

Example:
Lets go on the assumption that you have your music collection on the external. If you still have your music player running when you try to disconnect, you will be greeting with the same error message.

If the external contains any files that your Operating System uses, you will get this message anytime the computer is on. An example of this can be your "Page File".

Shutting the computer down correctly is your safest bet until you find exactly what file is being used and what program is using it. During shut down, the computer closes any running programs. With no programs running, it will safely disconnect from the external HD because there will be no files in use.

If you manually disconnect it while the file is in use, you could very easily corrupt the file and make it unusable. This is comparable to an Operating System getting corrupted from a computer not being shut down correctly (pulling the power from wall without doing a shut down).

Hope this helps.

this is a program provided by seagate for to check your hdd. This program has other options and has a friendly user interface that may help you find a solution to your problem.
simply install and run this tool and your drive will be properly repaired, as this error code is typicall for data corruption.
