Download Belarc Advisor (on another machine) and I would suggest you use a flash drive or optical disk to make it portable so you can run it on your sick PC. It will throughly search your system and give you great detail on what it finds for hard- and software. If it does not show a modem, then the little bit of hardware that, with a lot of help from software, comprise a modem has failed and this bit of hardware is (unfortunately) part of the motherboard in every computer made in the last decade or more.
The only external program you need to have available is any version of Internet Explorer 4.0 or later. For some perverted reason, Belarc uses IE to present its findings.
Belarc Advisor
You may be able to replace a failed on-board modem with a card but you will have to disable the original modem by turning it off (if it appears in Advisor) in the BIOS.

OK you simply need to install the right driver. Identify your Modem and find the driver install it and you will be OK. The driver should be on the disk that came with your modem. Otherwise you will have to use another machine to download.

How to reinstall windows xp thinkpad x41

How to Reload Windows XP Without Removing Files Deleting system files, modifying the registry and installing incompatible drivers to Windows XP can damage the integrity of the operating system, rendering it inoperable. Virus infections are often responsible for making the aforementioned changes to a system, but employees who have administrative access to the workstation can make deleterious modifications to the OS as well. Reinstalling Windows XP can repair the OS, but if work-related files are stored to the system partition, all of the data will be erased during the installation process. To reload Windows XP without losing files, you can perform an in-place upgrade, also known as a repair installation.

Step 1
Insert the Windows XP CD into the optical drive and then press "Ctrl-Alt-Del" to restart the computer. Step 2Press any key when prompted to load the contents of the disc. Press "Enter" on the Welcome to Setup screen.
Step 3 Read the license agreement, pressing "PgDn" to scroll down the page. Press "F8" to agree to the terms. The CD will search for previous installations of Windows XP. Step 4
Press "R" to repair the selected operating system. The disc will begin reinstalling the operating system to the hard drive without affecting personal files. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the repair installation. Step 5
Log in to Windows XP and sign on to the Internet when installation completes. Click "Start," "All Programs" and then "Windows Update." Step 6
Click "Scan for Updates" to search for applicable service packs and hotfixes to reinstall to the OS. Step 7
Click "Install Now" to bring the in-place upgrade up-to-date.
Things Needed
  • Windows XP CD

Tip
  • Make sure you have your Windows XP product key (found on the CD cover or on the computer case) available prior to reinstallation.

Warnings
  • If possible, back up your files previous to the installation in case something goes awry during the process.
  • You will need to reinstall all non-native programs and removable devices after performing an in-place upgrade.

No wireless adapter

Hi,

Have you check the wireless card under the Device Manager?

Start->Control Panel->Device Manager

Under Device Manager look for Network Adapter there will be sub folders under network adapter look for the wireless device. If its not showing it means that the Device is not working. If you want to make sure try to reinstall the Operating System and after that check again the Device Manager.

Friends laptop will no longer connect to internet. She also did not have any anti-virus software on her laptop, but does now. Like I said, she cannot connect to the internet, yet computer shows the...

You can right click on the "my computer" icon, click properties and click on the hardware tab. Then look for device manager. Look under modems to see if the internal modem is still displayed.
Sounds to me like she got a virus. Many will stop the user from connecting to the internet to download antivirus software. Have you run a scan on the computer since you installed the new anti-viurs? If not, see if you can do so. If you cannot run a scan. she more than likely has a virus and may need to clear the hard drive and use her re-image disks. After backing up her important files and documents to an external drive (flash driver, etc.)

I hope that these suggestions helped and will get your started on getting this laptop connected again.

Your system is infected by Sasser worm. The Sasser worm infects machines via network connections. It can attack entire networks of computers or one single computer connected to the Internet. The worm exploits a known windows vulnerability that is easily patched, however few systems seem to have this patch installed. It attacks Windows 2000 and Windows XP machines along with Windows NT and Windows Server 2003.

The patch from Microsoft known as the MS04-011 Security Update fixes the following vulnerabilities:
LSASS Vulnerability
LDAP Vulnerability
PCT Vulnerability
Winlogon Vulnerability
Metafile Vulnerability
Help and Support Center Vulnerability
Utility Manager Vulnerability
Windows Management Vulnerability
Local Descriptor Table Vulnerability
H.323 Vulnerability
Virtual DOS Machine Vulnerability
Negotiate SSP Vulnerability
SSL Vulnerability
ASN.1 “Double-Free” Vulnerability

Download the Windows patches for this vulnerability. Here is the link below:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms04-011.mspx

How Can I Remove the Sasser worm?

Follow these steps in removing the Sasser worm.

1) Disconnect your computer from the local area network or Internet

2) Terminate the running program
Open the Windows Task Manager by either pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL, selecting the Processes tab or selecting Task Manager and then the process tab on WinNT/2000/XP machines.
Locate one of the following programs (depending on variation), click on it and End Task or End Process

avserve.exe
avserve2.exe
skynetave.exe
any process running with the "_up.exe" suffix
Close Task Manager

3) Activate the Windows XP Firewall (if running Windows XP) or another firewall to prevent the worm from shutting your system down while downloading the patches. To activate the Windows XP firewall, follow these steps.
Click on Start, Control Panel
Double-click on Networking and Internet Connections, then click on Network Connnections
Right-click on the connection you use to access the Internet and choose Properties
Click on the Advanced Tab and check the box
"Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet"
Click OK and close out of the Network and Control Panel

4) Remove the Registry entries
Click on Start, Run, Regedit
In the left panel go to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>Software>Microsoft>Windows>Current Version>Run
In the right panel, right-click and delete the following entry

"avserve.exe"="%Windir%\avserve.exe"
"avserve2.exe"="%Windir%\avserve2.exe"
"skynetave.exe"= "%Windows%\skynetave.exe"
Close the Registry Editor

5) Delete the infected files (for Windows ME and XP remember to turn off System Restore before searching for and deleting these files to remove infected backed up files as well)
Click Start, point to Find or Search, and then click Files or Folders.
Make sure that "Look in" is set to (C:\WINDOWS).
In the "Named" or "Search for..." box, type, or copy and paste, the file names:

avserve.exe
avserve2.exe
skynetave.exe
C:\win2.log
Click Find Now or Search Now.
Delete the displayed files.
Empty the Recycle bin

6) Reboot the computer and update your antivirus software, and run a thorough virus scan using your favorite antivirus program.

For Automatic Removal of Sasser, download the Symantec removal tool, you'll still need to download the patches above and install them, however this removal tool will stop the Sasser worm from running, remove the items in the registry, and delete the infected files.

Upgraded mem.now mon pc dont shut off fan con to run

Computer doesn’t power down when users shut down
In some cases, Windows XP’s Setup program can misidentify the power management scheme in a computer’s BIOS as Advanced Power Management (APM) instead of Advanced Configuration Power Interface (ACPI). When this happens, users will notice that the computer no longer automatically powers down when they shut down Windows XP. Instead, they’ll see the message It Is Now Safe To Turn Off Your Computer and be forced to manually press the power button to turn off the computer.

You can verify this problem by checking the power management configuration in two places—Device Manager and the Control Panel. To quickly access Device Manager, select Start | Run, type Devmgmt.msc in the Open text box, and click OK. When you see the Device Manager window, locate and open the System Devices item. If Setup identified the system as having an APM-compliant BIOS, it will be listed as a Standard PC in the System Devices tree. (If it were identified as having an ACPI-compliant BIOS, you would see it listed here as a Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System.)

To check the power management configuration in the Control Panel, open the Control Panel from the Start menu. If the system is using Category View, select Performance And Maintenance and then click the Power Options icon. If the system is using Classic View, just click the Power Options icon. If Setup identified the system as having an APM-compliant BIOS, you’ll see an APM tab in the Power Options Properties dialog box. (If the system were identified as having an ACPI-compliant BIOS, you wouldn’t see an APM tab.)

You may be able to fix this problem with a BIOS update. To begin, check with the computer manufacturer’s Web site to see if it’s providing the latest BIOS update. If you’re troubleshooting an off-brand computer, you may be on your own as far as tracking down the BIOS update. Here’s how.

Once you obtain and install the BIOS update according to the manufacturer’s instructions, you must perform what I call a Refresh Installation, in which you reinstall Windows XP on top of an existing Windows XP installation. You must perform this reinstall operation because the power management features are tied to a special power management Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL). During the Refresh Installation procedure, Setup will completely redetect all installed hardware, including the updated BIOS, and rebuild the power management HAL as well as the part of the registry in which information about the installed hardware is stored.

Device manager not work properly & Modem not found

Check if the service is running, enter msconfig in the Start => Run box. Open the Services tab in the System Configuration utility's window. If the Plug and Play service isn't listed, uncheck the option in the box beside Hide All Microsoft Services. The option for the Plug and Play service should be enabled and should be shown to be running. If it isn't running, right-click the My Computer entry on the Windows Start menu and choose Manage. On the Computer Management window, expand the entry for Services And Applications and click Services. Make the Standard tab display its contents and locate the entry for Plug and Play. Double-click this entry and set the Startup type to Manual. Next, click the Start button under the Service type in the same window. The service should start, and the window can be closed. Should any warnings appear during this process, just click OK. The Device Manager should now be displaying all of its information
