Question about Kenmore Freezer 20.3 cu. ft. Frost Free Upright Freezer

1 Answer

Kenmore freezer 20.3 fost free upright freezer - in the past when the door was closed it sounded like a vacuum sucking some air out to seal the door. Now it does not and ice is forming in the door frame at the top corner where the opens. Any ideas?

Hello. Some freezers have a feature that actually **** in when the door is closed..thus forming a seal...after it gets back to normal cold tempature..of course duct taped so it will...try simply closing it then and see if it will..if not possibly you simply leaned on the door and got a little'warp" in it which is no major problem...put a flashlight inside the freezer and simply close the door to, hold it if necessary, but not with pressure..look around the seal and see if you see light thru it..if so you can take a freezer door, with your hands , usually caddy cornered..and gentlybend the door down towards the area that you see light from..the door doesn't actually bend, but they are built to adjust minor adjustments this way..if this fails..time for a new strip.

My kenmore is not pressure sealing

the problem is that the compressor is not working
call a technician for a proper diagnosis
and it is not a pressure sound but a vacuum sound as the door when closed drops the temp inside the unit and that creates a vacuum making the door temporarily hard to open

Upright freezer door inside developing ice

The door seal is at fault. Regardless of the small tear it is not sealing well.
Take a dollar bill and close it in the door. Then pull on the bill to feel resistance.
You will find it pulls easily in some place. That is where your air leak is that is causing the condensation.
Do this about every 6 inches all the way around the seal.

Kenmore upright freezer not cold enough to freeze

Sounds like a door seal that isn't sealing all the way around. That would be my first replacement. Is the unit level back to front and side to side? Is it really full of food?

Call your local appliance parts house and get a magnetic door seal first. They aren't that expensive. But make sure you do not have the freezer overloaded, which could account for the lack of that vacuum sound.

Finally, is self defost? Even if it is, a lot of times the vent on the bottom in the back gets packed with ice. If it is, remove the food and use a hairdryer, being carefull to unplug the freezer first. Melt all that ice and empty your overflow tray at the bottom underneath.

Good luck!

Upright Freezer self defrosting

THE (SUCKING AIR) OCCURS WHEN THE TEMP IS VERY LOW IN THE FREEZER AND YOU LET WARM AIR IN BY OPENING THE DOOR. WHEN THE DOOR IS CLOSED, THE WARM AIR IS COOLED CAUSING A VACUUM IN THE FREEZER. IF THE DOOR SEAL HAS A LEAK AROUND IT, THE SUCKING SOUND WILL NOT TAKE PLACE. CHECK THE DOOR SEAL FOR A GAP AT ONE OF THE CORNERS OR ALONG THE SIDES,BACK, BOTTOM, OR TOP.IF THE SEAL IS O.K., HOW IS THE TEMP? IF THE TEMP SEEMS WARM, YOU MAY NEED TO CHECK THE SEALED SYSTEM. LOOK AT THE FROST PATTERN ON THE EVAPORATOR. IS IT COMPLETE AND UNIFORM? IS ONLY PART OF THE EVAPORATOR FROSTED BACK? IF THE ENTIRE EVAPORATOR IS FROSTED BACK UNIFORMLY, THE SEALED SYSTEM IS O.K.

GE Upright Freezer problem/door

The door seal is damaged or the hindge alignment have allowed the warm air to enter and the cold air to leak out the of the freezer. Look and feel around the door for the cold air and check the top and bottom hinges to make sure they haven't become loose. Look for tears also around the seal because this will do the same thing. Let me know what you find. JT

Frost in Kenmore frost free

Although you say the seal is fine, this is almost certainly due to air getting in. With the door closed check that there isn't a tiny gap with a strip of thin card or plastic. Of course if air is getting in then it must also be getting out somewhere else so probe all around the seal.

Door seal

If the door was left open you may have frozen the evaporator (on a frost free). I would suggest defrosting it as soon as possible and make sure the door doesnt get left open again. If it is not frost free it may just be that it is still trying to recover the temp it had lost by an open door. Hope this helps.
