Question about Creative Labs Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra MP3 Player

1 Answer

Blank screen I have a 30GB Nomad Jukebox whose screen suddenly stopped showing. The blue light comes on, but nothing is on the screen. Every now and then the screen will show normally for a few seconds, maybe even a minute or two, before disappearing again. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas as to what has happened and if and how it might be fixed. Thanks for looking at my question.

I tried to reload the firmware in my Zen Vision M:30, but the computer said the load failed. Now all I get is a blue LED and nothing else. Is there another way to reload firmware in the ZEN? The computer doesn't recognize it now since it has no firmware in it. I love the ZEN, but I surely don't love Creative. What a lousy bunch!

Have the same problem! Not that it was dropped, but screen was just kinda blank one day. Still works, navigates through menus and whatnot, but screen is blanky. I took it apart, couldn't find any loose connections, and put it back together. Now the screen shows up but it's pretty faint. I'm guessing something is just loose, but I can't figure out what. There's the little ribbon that plugs into the mobo beneath the display screen that curves to the top of the screen into black tape, next to that are the copper strips, and the screen itself is mounted onto some soldered joints. There are two other little soldered connections on the bottom left.

Anyone have any idea how to reseat the screen? Which connection is loose? How do I make the display darker (or more contrast, I should say....). The contrast is already set to 100 on the software settings. The screen is too faint to be useful unless you hold it at just the right angle. But that's stupid. How do I restore the display to full working order?

    Thanks!

I did try to gently tap the LCD but all that did was limit the time the blue background lit up.

can you be more thorough as in what i should i do to get my problem fixed? i would hate to go to a technician because i fixed the jack not so long ago

I had the same problem with a blanked screen after a drop. I was able to get it back by disassembling the unit and GENTLY pushing down at the top of the LCD. Apparently it stopped making a good connection when I dropped it.. whew! I've seen a number of comments about the same issue; hopefully this will help.

I modded my unit as well with a larger hard drive, so I didn't want to send it in to Creative for repair...

Try this: disconnect the player from the computer, turn it off, hold in the volume + button, and reconnect the player to the computer while holding the volume + button in. Keep holding the volume + button for an additional 5-50 seconds. Windows should eventually go into recovery mode and revive the player- it will pop up a window that says Found New Hardware Wizard

There's a good possibility that you cracked the board or broke a solder joint at the earphone connector.

LCD is soldered onto the board. Meaning the difficulties of replacing the LCD will be there, not to say it would not be possible. But for about the same price (my guess by looking on ebay), you could get a used Zen Xtra (without a hdd) for about $30 or less. After you get a new board you could replace your player with the new used one, making use of your old hdd

Holy **** suggestion 4 worked. Top right side near the menu button - a little whack with the middle finger knuckle, and you can actually hear the hard drive spin up. I still like this player - 30GB for heaven's sake !!! and any iPod that comes into this house goes to my kids anyway. Might be time to make a backup of all the music though....
