The X means the device is not functioning. Open control panel, open System. Click the hardware tab & cick Device Manager. Scroll down to Sound, video and game controller. Click the + sign. Find the red X, right click it once & uninstall it. Re-start the notebook. Go online to your notebook's Mfg's site. Armed with your model number find the latest driver version for your intergrated sound card. Download & install it. Re-start the notebook when finished. If you still get the red X, your sound chip in the notebook is defective.

Hello the driver can be downloaded here:

http://support.acer.com/us/en/default.aspx

Select first your product (example aspire desktop or notebook)

Next the 4 digit number and sometimes a letter/s
The model number is on a label on the machine.
Now you can select your model by confirm.
And remember to select your current windows.

The next you have to know is who the graphic manufacture is.
They use: ATI, NVIDIA, INTEL depending on the model.

The file you may download needs to be unziped before installation.

Good luck

What standard audio driver can be install on my pc...

There are a couple generic audio drivers. But before that why are you looking for standard audio drivers? Regardless which OS you are using (Win XP, VISTA), you will find a generic set of audio drivers included with the OS. This is for basic audio output. If you have a specific audio card installed you should be using the drivers from the manufacturer to get the best quality from the card. Although odds are you do not have an add-on audio card. Chances are you are using the audio out puts supplied on the motherboard. This is far more common now because motherboard manufactures are able to get pretty great sound from on-board mounted audio processors.

If this is the case then those are the drivers you want.
If this is a pre-built system you should go to the computer makers web site and grab the drivers there. If it's a home brew computer check out the motherboard makers web site.

If you want to download the best possible fit for the majority of on-board audio as well as add-on cards that would be Realtech. Just click the link and when the web page open click the check box. When the next window opens find your OS and click go for the drivers.

http://www.realtek.com.tw/DOWNLOADS/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=23&PFid=23&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false

Steps for installing audio drivers that came with the OS:

  • Click "Start" and "Control Panel." Then double-click "Administrative Tools" and "Computer Management."
  • Choose "Device Manager" in the field on the left-hand side of the screen.
  • Look for "Sound, video and game controllers." Click the plus sign (+) next to that field. This will expand a list of devices under sound, video and game controllers, which will include your sound card or on-board sound device.
  • Right click on your audio driver in the list and select "Update Driver."
  • Follow the instructions and Windows will automatically search for and install any driver updates.
I hope this helps.

I have a ATI mobility radion9600 on my Ferrari notebook. Just recently it had some problems. lines were appearing in the screen and color was mismatched. But sometimes the problem fixes it self like magic...

hi, i have 2 aspire 5100 series notebooks, i had same on the 2 units, acer has no answers. i would however get a cooler, this helped me-also get the amd dashboard software,(on the amd site) this will give temps, voltage. and if you don't need to run at full throttle, use the e-power management and lower cpu speed-thus less heat.also when lines start up,i reboot and it's good till next time it happens. hope this helps, good luck!

Sound device

Hi candy man1, I found the link to your Toshiba Satellite L25-S121.
What I was looking for is drivers for your notebook but I found little in that area. (As seen at this link:)
http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/askIris.jsp
With little information, (A manual in English would be nice). I could guide you to enter the bios & check if the sound device is enabled or set to auto. (It may be set to disable). The link above includes, (Toshiba PC Diagnostic Tool for Windows XP/2000). You can download it & install it. It may help find the reason your notebook sound is not functioning. (The single beep at start up is normal).
Please run windows update service for your notebook. Click the start button & slide to All programs. Listed at the top should be an icon, (Window Update), click on it & it should run.
Let me know how things go. Post here.

I think my video card wont dump its cache

Have you tried un-installing and re-installing the game? EA has posted instructions for doing so on their support website. I've pasted the website link and instructions for doing so below. I've had to un-install and re-install at least six times myself, and have seen exactly the error that you have described occur twice. I hate this game for the crashes that occur regularly. My system plays Crysis fine, with no crashes, but crashes regularly from 2142. I wish that for once and for all EA would fix this game. It is the best battle simulation in the world, IMHO.
