Question about Brother MFC 8500 All-In-One Laser Printer

1 Answer

My MFC-8500 has worked flawlessly (7-8 years) till present. Now the copy/scanner light now does not come on across the full width of the scanning face. So when copying (or scanning) a dark band about 1.5" wide is made on the copy. Observing the lights (the 'light' is segmented into 14 sections, three of which, in the critical area, only flash on and off. Can I purchase a replacement light or part and change it myself?

Yes sir. But it is definitely critical. You can even break your device. However, if you can simply unlock your unit with ease then you are good to go. But one more thing is that, the spare part you are looking for is actually hard to find among resellers or vendors. And when you find one, is is usually priced half the price of the printer. Try your luck.

Just got a new computer w/windows 7 and now my brother mfc-8840D won't scan to pdf now? Any ideas on a solution to fix?

How to get a MFC-8840/D/DN to scan to Windows 7 over the network or by USB:

First - Download the Windows Vista Full Driver & Software Package from Brother: Brother MFC-8840DN driver download page

Install the drivers using a custom install - pick only the Network scanning drivers, unless you want the other junk - no promises on how well the other stuff works.
    -------
Alternatively, if connecting the MFC-8840DN to Windows 7 by USB, download the Printer and Scanner Driver for Local Connection. It is a separate download. Install only the Scanner driver.
    -------

Once the Vista scanner driver is installed, you can test by running the built-in Windows 7 Scanner Wizard. Here are instructions on how to test.

As far as conversion to PDF, that will depend on the software. I am not sure if the Control Center or Paperport softwares work on Windows 7. I have not tried those. I have found that freeware STP will works fine.
Here is a link to the STP homepage.

Getting a black strip in copy mode on X6575 lexmark printer. No line in print or test mode

Most likely a page was scanned with 'white out' (Liquid Paper), still wet on the page. As the page feeds over the scanner, (a narrow strip of glass that runs across the width of the page along the feed path) the wet liquid paper comes off on the glass as a thin line and dries. Thereafter, when copying, the scanner light does not go through the liquid paper streak and the result when printed is a thin vertical line that runs the full length of the page.

If this is your problem: follow the path that the paper travels when sending a fax or making a copy, until you find the scanner (narrow glass strip). Take a clean, soft cloth and a small amount of methylated spirit (or white spirit) and remove the now dried Liquid Paper from the glass. Clean the whole strip ensuring that the glass is left clean and dry.

Reference page 22-17 in reguards to cleaning the charge wire on the drum unit and page 22-16 for cleaning the document scanner. This is a link to your Brother MFC 8500. Hope this helps.

HP Officejet Pro 8500 - issue scan & copy

while the printer is on take a damp cloth and wipe the scanner glass and then open the automatic document feeder and clean the scanner glass there and then remove the cartridges and close down the printer now just pull out the power cable from the back of the product and if possible and the walljack wait for 30 secs and replug the printer first to the walljack and then to the printer, now try to scan....(if your printer is wireless then after the above you will have to run the wireless setup wizard again).if that doesn't work, try the same above but just before plugging the printer cable press and hold the power button,if that doesn't work do the same holding the #3 buttons,if this doesn't work then do the same holding down the #6 buttons,if even this doesn't work then call in to hp at 1800-474-6836 and get a replacement

Black line down the middle of scanned documents.

Try leaving the cover open and run a test scan, once with a fresh sheet as the item to be scanned and then a second time without anything on the table.  You may see what is blocking the light source or possibly a defect in it.
Scanning is done left-right, left-right across the width of the page and the vertical stripe indicates that the blockage is present during each scanned line.
In servicing copiers and multifunction machines, I have found a number of curious contaminents, one of the most annoying was a moth, still alive, that would randomly sit on the lamp, causing some pages to come out OK, others not.
If your copies and printouts are coming out fine, then only the scanner can be at fault.
